I'd love a full on Pixar quality CG animation of the original movie...

I'd love a full-on Pixar quality CG animation of the original movie, making as few edits as necessary to clean up transitions, etc. Use the same soundtrack mostly, remastered with some "enhanced" background sound effects, and cleaned up vocals.

For the CG, go full-on state-of-the-art, count the pours in their skin quality, with a tiny bit of interpretation to liven things up a bit. The "Plutonium Niborg" segment could look pretty awesome with some vibrant color and playing with light sources, etc.

Imagine how much fun they could have with the Captain Stern sequence!

Heck even if Hollywood won't do it, I bet some super talented individuals listening out there on the internet could pull it off. You'd probably make a name for yourself.

I think it could be pretty good if treated with care and respect.

Thoughts? <rip away>

No.

Absolutely not. Part of what makes this film so great is the animation itself. A 3D animated version wouldn't at all capture the same atmosphere and effect as the original, not even close.

I agree...NO. I hate that we have abandoned animation for CGI. The two CAN co exist; and Heavy Metal is an animation film, NOT CGI. To do a completely different entity as CGI, fine. But, to reproduce 'Heavy Metal' as CGI is an awful idea.
Think of the thousands of talented animators that could put their talent to good use in animation, that fail to get a job, because of the death of animation in film.
Its tragic, that the only animation films that we can appreciate are from the past. Wake up, we want new hardcore "TRUE" animation in film, but do not have it in today's world, because of producers that fail to see their true potential.

Producers and production houses have abandoned the art for money, and that is where they fail.
That we start to see film as art and not simply marketable.
To have a movie, any movie, that sells, it needs a soul.

Animation is not dead, just dormant.

I'd rather see a live action version. Real boobs, man. REAL BOOBS! :D

Actually, the boobs aside, I think it would have been awesome with today's special effects. But they would have to keep the original music, which is 90% of it's appeal!

reply

well i agree. i think it'd be really great.
i agree it might lose some of the greatness the 2D and drawing style has,
but if the person converted it right, it could add a great deal also.

reply

Nothing wrong with the original visuals and effects.

I think it looks great, its the whole point of watching it.

however, I must say though....
it would be cool if the last segment (that beautiful, busty fantasy chick that kicks as$)
i thought that was a great fantasy story that could even be more elabourated & more focused on as a future animated short-story or something (where will a big hollywood studio invest in something like this?- it's damn shame though)

Coz' that fantasy segment was the best ever, I think it even rivalled Lord of the Rings... seriously. It's like so much could be told about that story-line- True fantasy like no other.

nudity aside even, there doesn't even have to be nudity at all seriously- I'm not saying I liked the story coz of the nudity- though I must say, DAMN!!!!!....

This female protagonist is quite engaging & mesmerising. It's like I wished for there to be more of her & for the story to just go on & on, amazing actually. I even ended up respecting her (how do you like that?)

Great film- even better ending.

In a sense, they did remake a few of these segments, just as other movies (not Heavy Metal-related) B-17 is like all the other sci-fi horror films about astronauts being killed one-by-one by some type of creature. In fact, B-17 was Dan O'Bannon's original inspiration for ALIEN (though Heavy Metal greatly altered the story)
Harry Canyon...granted they haven't made a film noir like that since the 1950s, but in the Animatrix there's the Detective's Story which is somewhat like that, with a disenfranchised man who meets a femme fatale with a not-so-happy ending.
Taarna has been remade over and over again. You just don't realize it. Every single sword epic is about avenging one's kind, or slaughtered relatives or some kind of looming threat to the protagonist's homeland by a barbarian horde.
Granted these examples aren't specifically similar, but in a nutshell, we've seen these stories redone plenty of times, just not in Heavy Metal.

Would a CG remake be cool? No. When I used to get the magazine, Kevin Eastman would always talk about making another movie, but it's Heavy Metal. As much as I love it, it's not marketable to most people, despite the fact that most people like violence and nudity (but when you animate it, suddenly it's not that cool--whatever). Besides, it has to be animated to keep up with the illustrated look that the magazine has (I don't think i've seen one CG story in one issue).

Cool, i'll check out B-17 ( i like those sorta stories)

I get your point about the Fantasy films & how the Heavy Metal segments have been remade over & over.... my point is I'm talking about the SPECIFIC storyline of Taarna (I assume it's the Fantasy chick right?)...anyway, that specific storyline itself was pretty amazing & yes it has to be animated- specifically that kind of animation.
I think that certain mediums of media adds that certain (what the French folks call it)

& the music of that last Segment itself... man... sublime.

I think the score of the movie is one of the most overlooked musical masterpieces ever imagined. I still put it on the shelf next to Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I actually had to look forever just to find the score online (I kept finding the rock music soundtrack instead).

It would still have to be an anthology, because--for me--that is the Heavy Metal experience. The problem is that Heavy Metal 2000 (FAKK2) was Kevin Eastman's ode to Taarna, so the major climactic story would have to be something new.

It should be called Heavy Metal 3 to raise awareness of the first one, and then younger people or people unaware of the movie will search for it and probably fall in love with Taarna just like we did.

reply

You know what? I haven't seen Heavy Metal 2 & I didn't know it was an ode to Taarna. So exited as I was I checked out the trailer here on IMDB & to be honest... I was dissapointed.

The thing about Taarna in Heavy Metal 1 was that this chick never said a word... her Vengeance, facial expressions and her Actions said it all. I mean this chick was serious!
She didn't have no Wise-as$ remarks or anything like that- this chick, nay, this Woman... was something else entirely buddy.

A true role model for chicks if there ever was one... okay sure she's wearing tight-fitting barely there leather clothes (it's Fantasy after all) but seriously- that aside & all the sexy stuff aside- this woman was a truly remarkable character in a very interesting & fascinating Genre.

reply

Yeah, what I liked about Taarna was that she didn't have to prove vocally that she was tough.

2000 is similar to Taarna in ways that you might not want to read ahead if you're interested:

-A green entity drives a man insane and causes him to raise a barbarian army to conquer a peaceful people

-A woman takes up a journey of vengeance against him

-The woman swims across a pool in an ancient temple at which on the other side she gains the skimpy outfit and sword needed to fight the evildoers.

However, apart from Taarna, FAKK2 doesn't have a giant pet (just an assortment of characters that serve as more of an entourage), she kills a lot more barbarians and the story of Tyler (the psychopathic barbarian leader) is darkly funny at times.

Also, Frederic Talgorn's score is good, but nothing like Bernstein's.

reply

Taara was a total BAMF. She truly embodied the saying "actions speak louder than words".

Even as a woman, I didn't have a problem with her nudity. She wasn't dressing like that for any men (okay, so the filmmakers decided that she'd look like that) but the nudity is not sexual. She's taking a bath, then she's getting tortured. If she was raped, we don't see it, but I kind of doubt she was since she was so tough. Those guys probably wanted to keep their dicks, LOL.

I look up to Taarna a lot. And who would've thought that such an role model-worthy woman would be found in the Heavy Metal movie, which, let's be honest, was aimed at teenage / college age boys?

I liked some of the other segments too, and don't think everything has to have a "role model" in it (I can just watch a movie and have fun, and it's not like I'm gonna show Heavy Metal to any kids), but when I see a good one, I know it.

There is no objective reality... and that's Sucker Punch

No.

It wasn't the story that made the first movie great. The 'story' was just an excuse to showcase the imagination and talent of the artists behind it, just like the magazine. The style of the animation was terrific, too, because each segment captured the look and feel of the artist it was based upon. But that was 31 years ago. We've had three decades of awesome Heavy Metal stories since then to choose from. Why on earth should THESE stories be remade?

Why not make animated shorts of some of the other fantastic Heavy Metal stories and characters, like Sha, Druuna, Lorna, Argstein, Teddy, Requiem, The Imploder, A Fistfull of Blood, Gullivera, Ranxerox, Gypsy, Snake, Galactic Geographic, Kwaidan, The Scourge of the Gods, Claudia: Vampire Knight, Fluorescent Black, Arawn, Regulator 666, and countless others.

reply

The animations were done this way intentionally to give the film an artistic and iconic look and feel.
