1981 was a big year for slasher movies

I thought Happy Birthday To Me was one of the better slasher clones of the early 80's. It's got some competent direction and decent performances. Not to mention the special effects are actually quite good and still hold up for the most part.

My favourite knock off movie is still The Prowler, I know it actually doesn't make much sense but then again you're not really expecting much from these hastily written, "strike while the iron's hot" slasher movies of the era. I was never a big fan of The Burning and My Bloody Valentine was just ok to me.

But I'm wondering what other peoples favourite slasher movies from that era are?

I've seen quite a few of the classics from that era and most of them disappointed me compared to Halloween or Black Christmas. But my favourites would be Friday the 13th and My Bloody Valentine. The director's cut on the Blu-ray release, mind you, because the theatrical release of MBV feels very incomplete, although the potential is still there. I think it has a decent storyline, with decent character development, a decent build-up (often very lacking in old school slashers), decent acting and it's decently filmed and edited. And the restored death scenes are effective and explicit. So many 80s death scenes are so short and show hardly anything. If you don't show any gore, at least put in some suspense.

I was just going to say that MBV's director's cut is a much better movie.

Oh hey Stratego, I recognise you from the IMDB boards back in the day, good to see a familiar name again. I presume you're still active on the Scream boards here?

Yeah I'm not sure if I saw the theatrical version of MBV but it felt a little unstructured and that could have been because scenes were omitted, but I might try and track down the directors cut.

reply

Yes, great to see some of the old IMDb members here! Yeah, I still check out the Scream boards, but not much activity there, unfortunately.

Do watch the director's cut if you haven't, it might still not be your cup of tea, but it's definitely better than the theatrical release, even though some footage is still missing.

I love Bloody Birthday (1981) and Blood Rage (1987)

There’s something magical about Louise Lasser’s performance in Blood Rage.

You're right, it was a big time for the slasher genre. What I liked the most about HBTM, was that it kept you guessing. They give you plenty of suspicion to pass around to everyone, until (you think) you see Ginny making the kills, and even then she gives you enough to doubt it. The end was corny - almost soap opera like, and then presumably, Ginny took the fall anyway. Corny or not, it led to a very tragic ending.

Some slashers - like this one, Funhouse, etc - kept you guessing. While others (Halloween, sequels to F13, etc) you knew who the killer was, you were just there to watch it all play out. And it was a good bloody fun time either way.

I'm a fan of early 80s slashers, like you. While never really a fan of the F13 franchise, I loved Halloween 1 and 2, but lost interest in anything after that. Terror Train is a definite favorite, along with My Bloody Valentine (original only), Prom Night (also only the original), Funhouse, (though Funhouse kinda went "creature-feature" in the end). Early 80s slashers were good fun suspense, and some really good jumps. To the credit of modern horror though, you gotta admit, the gore factor has been upped over the past 20 years or so. Something 80s American horror shied away from.

I do enjoy gore, and maybe this is just because I was younger then, but early 80's slasher flicks scared me much more than the jump scare, gory films now. It's like today we have the pg 13 horror, or all out "torture porn". Maybe I'm being unfair, but that's how I feel.

A movie, that despite the cheese factor, can still give me the creeps is Slumber Party Massacre (1982). I'm not saying that it's a great movie, but there was just something about it.

Love this and The Prowler.

Damn straight it was. It truly was the peak of the slasher sub-genre, so many were released in 1981;
- Halloween II
- Friday the 13th Part II
- My Bloody Valentine
- The Burning
- The Funhouse
- The Prowler
- X-Ray
- Hell Night
- Just Before Dawn
- Happy Birthday To Me
- Graduation Day
- Final Exam

I enjoy most of those films. With my favorites being Halloween II, F13 2, The Funhouse & My Bloody Valentine.
