WTF, Oliver Stone?!

Haven't seen this movie but it looks corny. Did Oliver Stone really start out like this? WTF. And Michael Caine was in it, too!

I'll bet YOU can't make that slurping sound Anthony Hopkins made in Silence of the Lambs...

Well, it's not that strange when you see that both Scorsese and Coppola, two of the unquestionably great American filmmakers started out their careers by makng cheapo exploitation films for Roger Corman, both verging on leery violence and prurient softcore porn. Everyone has to begin somewhere.

reply

why don't you see the film before you judge it?

reply

because... it's not available ANYWHERE, that's why.

Anyway, no, it's not "corny" at all, in my opinion. I think it's actually an artful, intelligent, well-acted psychological thriller. Stone already showed a lot of talent, and Caine,as always, is excellent. The reason it wasn't well-received was because it came out during the early eighties "splatter horror" period, when horror films were a dime a dozen. It was too smart and character driven (not splattery enough) for the horror buffs of that time, and critics were turned off to horror altogether at the time because horror was everywhere, and they missed the art house craze days. If they'd really stopped and paid attention, however, they'd have seen that this IS an art house film more than a horror film.

absolutely right.

I can't believe the same guy who directed the immortal Any given Sunday would direct such a film!

Do you have a youtube link to support your statement?

Any Given Sunday was a snooze fest. I remember I actually walked out of the theater on that one. Definitely not one of his better films nor is The Hand but at least I was able to finish The Hand.

Stone doesn't disown this movie. He just did an interesting commentary on the DVD track. He acknowledges it's not his best work, but you can tell there are moments he's fond of...especially Caine's performance.

It's pretty campy at times, but it's also pretty well acted and has some moments that work really well. Actors generally do a nice job. Caine's really good as a sort of frustrated man's man sort of guy who has some normal frustrations and problems but then goes off the rails near the end as he finds himself in an insane situation.

Funny how it took me exactly 10 years to finally see this movie after making my original post.

I kind of liked it. It's not one of Stone's best films, but Caine's performance makes it work.

You finally tracked down that VHS huh?

reply

Nah, I found it streaming somewhere online. 
