What if Laurie WASN'T his sister?

They made her his sister for THIS movie, that's why he goes to the hospital to kill her...if they HADN'T gone with that and she WAS just a random babysitter, and he found out she was still alive, do you think he still would've tracked her down and taken out the whole hospital staff as well?

reply

Probably. Given the first movie made her a star and she and Pleasence were the two people audiences wanted to see more than Michael. As for story, unfinished business. No killer likes to leave loose ends or survivors. Part of the psychosis.

If they hadn't used the family angle, random babysitters would've worked to maybe the 5th film. Then it would've gotten old.

i doubt he even knew laurie was his sister. i forget if anyone even told him

reply

He was 6 when she was 2. He knew. If he's smart enough to pick up a knife and murder Judith, he's smart enough to know how many siblings he had.

The sister angle wasn't needed, for sure.

Holy mackerel! I've said that all along, though. Laurie could've just been the one that got away. Why Carpenter made them siblings is beyond me.

but her appearance probably changed a little bit from when she was 2 to when she was 17 or whatever age she was. her height and weight would have changed drastically, plus her hairstyle may be different. also she had a different last name.

unless someone told him, like maybe a person on the street he talked to that day it would be hard for him to know laurie was his sister.

i'm fairly certain he had no clue. picking up a knife and murdering Judith is easy but even Matt Houston would need to do some intense investigating to prove laurie strode was laurie myers.

and Michael myers ain't know Matt Houston

reply

Originally, before the sister angle, in the first film, he only followed her because she stopped by his house and looked like Judith. The whole looking like Judith thing was probably a clue. Also, in flashbacks for part 2, a young Laurie visited Michael in the hospital and he even turned to look at her. So he knew what she looked like as a kid and as a pre-teen. Kids don't change that much from pre-teen to teen. Especially facial features, which can range back to parents (which we only saw briefly). Also, no one mentions this, but what of the "sealed" records that were spoken of? About the Strodes. Maybe she was mentioned during one of his non-Loomis hearings.

Really a stretch here, but the same Dr. Wynn from the first film, the one talking to Loomis turned out to be the head of the Thorn Cult in 6. Maybe he he told Michael about Laurie, even helped him escape. Maybe Bernardi, who wasn't there at 10, but supposed to be watching him was a cult member. Wynn probably was the one who taught him how to drive a car.

So who's to say really how Michael knew, it really wasn't thought up too well by Carpenter after his 6-pack of beer.

i do believe the Thorn Cult explanation makes most sense. Dr. Wynn probably told him and helped him escape

If they didn't do the sister angle in part 2, everyone at that time would be like why the hell is he still after her?

And if the film was still successful then Michael possibly would have been in part 3, finally giving the audience the answer to the whole brother sister storyline.

reply

Unfinished business. Psychos don't like leaving survivors. Even sane methodical people don't. No witnesses. So that'd be as good a reason as any, sister or not. II was successful, but Carpenter was tired of the story and killed it. Akkad brought it back for 5 more films before he died. Wouldn't have made it that far if they weren't still wanted.

I like to leave the sister crap out, and go with Michael just wanted to finish a kill that got away. Michael not stopping until he kills you is much scarier.

While that's all well and good, since Halloween caused an explosion of killers stalking victims, even one that got away (Alice in Friday 2) Halloween had to separate itself from the pack with the family angle, otherwise it'd just been another slasher and no one would've cared. Just another cash in.

Family gave it depth, made it different and more importantly, gave it a purpose. Random only works 2 or 3 times then it gets ridiculous (see Fridays after 2). Family made it franchise. It was also mimicked by the other 2, Friday gave Jason a sister (which until then he was an only child, Pamela said so herself) and Nightmare gave Freddy a daughter and used the mother.

Nightdance and the other Halloween comics were okay side projects, but for movie's sake, it had to be more connected. Unfortunately now, Res. and age took Laurie off the table and it's too late to get John back. So they have to go random one last time.

Yep. Own all the comics that came out. Even the Return to Haddondield Convention exclusive. Sucks they never finished FDOLS. I've considered getting the trade paperback, which has the first 2 and allegedly part of the 3rd or at least what was supposed to happen, but never got around to it.

Sadly it won't happen. Unlike the Kevin Smith comics where they just wait til he gets around to it, the publisher that produced FDOLS, Devil's Due has long since given up on it. It's been 8 years and the creative forces have moved on. I doubt even Trancas even remembers it.

It would be nice to finish it, though.

Tired of being attacked. I've tried to put an end to it. Whether it works or not remains to be seen, but at least I feel better. This is why I'm here, nice discussions with people like you on topic. Not having to defend myself. But I will if I have to.

I absolutely HATE that they made her his sister. Giving him a motivation and a mission made him far less scary. I like to pretend that Marion had received the wrong information and was mistaken, it was way better when she was just some random girl he targeted,

Agreed.......the concept that any of us could randomly fall foul of inexplicable evil on a day that starts out like any other, is far more powerful and unnerving than a guy just chasing his sister.

And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.

reply

While he didn't have to make them siblings, she could've just been the one that got away, and that's why he carried on his pursuit of her, making them sibling wasn't a horrible thing. And I certainly didn't HATE it. It gave the series legs, after all.

Gave the series legs? Good thing dave has you on ignore or else he'd see that you were stealing his catch phrases.

Don't call it a comeback. I've been here for years.

reply

Not that the series needed legs, Barn. Lol. I would've been happy to leave it at II.
