How was it filmed?

I saw this thirty one years ago and my memory has faded a lot plus I was a child at the time (8 years old) and things look different to them. According to the description here they encounter Wholly Mammoths and Sabre Toothed tigers. CGI did not exist back then, so how the hell could such animals be made to look even remotely real? Was it claymation like King Kong or the old dinosaur movies? Did they take an elephant and use makeup to make it look like a mammoth?

reply

No, it was all practical.

Too bad it's never gotten a DVD or Blu-ray release so I could watch it again. I saw it when it came out, and maybe a few years later on HBO or something. Have not seen this movie in probably 25 years now. I do remember that everything was very well done and had a highly realistic look to it. For a movie that had no real dialogue in it, it really held your interest.

UMMMM, Netflix has it on DVD, or you can buy one elsewhere. Just search.

That's good news! I'll have to add this to my Netflix list. I'd love to see it again after all these years.

EDIT: I checked. It's not only on disc, but is available as a streaming movie right now.

reply

Currently offered on NETFLIX for streaming.

There is a UK (but not US) Blu Ray: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Quest-for-Fire-Blu-ray/73450/ (20 screenshots)

I recognize a few locations, I hiked there a few years later.

Everything in the film was shot live; there were no optical effects done in post production.

The woolly mammoths were played by circus elephants.

Rae Dawn Chong was not only comfortable being naked but liked being naked. These were why she stayed naked between scenes.

The special features and commentary state that there are only two species of hominids in the movie, Homo-sapiens and Neanderthal. Naoh and Ika are Homo-sapiens; however, the director commentary states that Ika's people are "more evolved". The other species, the Ape-like creatures, are representing Neanderthal man. If using the shooting locations as a reference; Naoh is from Scotland, Ika is from Kenya, and of course the Neanderthals are from Germany.
