Is there a good picture quality version?

I recently brought the english version of this film on the hollywood dvd label and I enjoyed the film. The only problem I had was that the picture was very dark throughout most of the film. I understand that the director shot alot of this film with a camera technique that made day for night by using a filter or by only opening the camera lense a certain amount. But for alot of the film it was very dark and hard to make out what was going on. I was just wondering if there is another print of the film, where the picture quality has been better transfered to dvd or if every version of the film is the same. Cheers.
