Kermit missing the diamond

Okay, let's suppose that you are watching this movie for the first time. You have known for a long time that the Muppets are just puppets, and you know that many characters don't have working hands.

You got all that? Good. Now, let's say that you have known for years that the Muppets are puppets, many characters hands don't work, and you know that many tricks are hard to master. Let's get to the baseball diamond scene. Better yet, if you haven't seen the movie yet and don't want the ending spoiled, go to another page or thread now.

Now, during the end, the Muppets are throwing and catching th baseball diamond. All of the characters who have the diamond in their hands are "live hand" puppets, meaning that their hands are operated by the hands of performers, and not arm wires, so they can move their hands and fingers more freely. Now, you know that Kermit isn't a live hand puppet. Near the end of the scene, Kermit has his hand up in the air, planning to catch it. Do you know that he won't catch it, because of the way his hands work, or do you think that Jim henson would go out and have some elaborate trick used for kermit to actually catch the ball with his hand?

Um, what do you mean the Muppets aren't real??? :-(

Hate to disappoint you, but they aren't. They are puppets. However, we aren't usually reminded of their limited fields of movement.

You're supposed to think he'll catch the diamond because in our minds, he is real. Yeah, he is just a puppet, but what makes him special is we are not reminded of his limited field of movement. The reason they had Nicky catch it was to have the bad guy seemingly win and try to get away. Then Miss Piggy saves them by crashing into the room on the motorcycle.

The first time I saw it, I genuinely thought Kermit was going to catch the diamond; it just seemed so out of left-field for him not to.

:D~

Well, the whole bit was supposed to be funny with the Muppets playing catch with the diamond while Louis Gazaggar was announcing it.

Believe me, in a movie where they pulled off bike riding Muppets, I'm sure Jim Henson could've worked the same Muppet magic to allow Kermit to catch a ball if he wanted. I really don't think anything was too challenging to Henson to pull off with with the Muppets. Just saying.
