Not only does this film suck, it really is pathetic. There is little, if any suspense and what makes watching it even harder is the fact that there is no requirement for a "process of elimination" guesswork on who the killer might - it really is that obvious. The motive behind the murders is actually funny and for the life of me I cannot understand why the director wanted a five minute "death throes" take of the killer opening his legs? What a pile of *beep* this film is (and I thought that when I watched it in the 80s).

The film isn't particularly scary, but it is credible given the genre and the time period. The director must have some sort of (pardon the choice of phrase for I can't seem to think of a better one) hard-on for music and it's relation to sequences. There are a few scenes in the film that are awkwardly long in which the director opts to show the movement in slow-motion while creating some sort of build-up. There is also a scene in which some of the graduates-to-be are sitting around singing "Graduation Day Blues" with guitar and harmonica accompaniment. I recently got to see this film on the big screen as part of an Exhumed Films showing. It was a double-feature that also included Sleepaway Camp. Traditionally, Exhumed Films highlights horror movies that are so corny/dated that it turns out to be more of a laugh fest than anything. There wasn't much in this film to mock. When you eventually get to the heart of what the reason is for all the killings, it does become noteworthy in a creepy way. It just tends to drag a little with the musical sequences and some major cross-cutting in the first half of the film.
Hope this helps.

It's really really crappy! And yet, if you're just a little bit of a fan of early 80's slashers you might enjoy it. The killing sequences are incredibly cheesy, the plot is incoherent as hell and the identity of the killer is very easy to guess. Standard slasher-guff, but fun.

Gee they're good at playing dead, aren't they?

reply

The film isn't too bad. Depends on how much you're into horror and old-school slasher films.

IT's a video for the 80's glam band, 'Felony'!

By now, you've already seen it, so you know...

"Lookie! Built you a little fry house!''

It's really not very good, not even as a slasher film, but I hold a soft spot in my heart for this one. I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid!

And don't forget you get to hear Vanna White say she wet her pants! I wish it could have gotten the MST3K treatment.

Graduation Day, Final Exam and Splatter University all three are pretty lousy.

reply

I think this is pretty good actually as long as you take it as a tongue-in-cheek slasher that offers nothing new to the genre and plays it out as a delightfully fun murder mystery/slasher. I thought Final Exam and Splatter University were pretty good too. You just have to watch these movies in the right frame of mind.

IMHO what made this movie so funny is that if it had been written with the INTENTION of being a satirical take on early-80s slasher films (heaven knows there were dozens if not hundreds of them), it would have been a bang-on smash hit. But it was actually written to be a serious movie. Keeping that in mind as you watch lends to the feel of watching an enjoyable comedy.

And it, like Final Exam or even Sleepaway Camp or Prom Night 1980 or early Friday the 13th movies, *is* a prototypical "one of the pack" movie from the early 80s and as such is a fascinating look at history.

I personally *really* liked it and would recommend it to any fan of prototypical, formulaic slasher films.

I saw this first time in the early 80, and I found this movie quite good.

And a some nice killing.

It's awesome. If you're an 80's slasher film fan you'll love it.

It's your basic 80s slasher. It was one of the first slashers I saw (back when it was a staple on premium cable), so I have a soft spot for it. If you like other 80s slashers you'll probably like this one. It's not a classic (even of this type), but it's an enjoyable waste of 90 minutes. Plus, where else are you going to see Vanna White and Linnea Quigley in the same movie?

The guy who plays the cop turns up in a several episode storyline in season 4 of HOUSE. It took me forever to figure out where I knew him from.
