The Novel by Peter Straub Was Really Boring

I tried to read it once and found the first chapter really riveting, but after that, it got totally dull. I never finished it. The movie is way better. Interesting seeing the classic film star Fred Astaire in an R-rated movie with nudity and bloody violence.

The more I study it, the greater the puzzle becomes.

Actually I got tired of trying to read it- when I was 14. At that age I compared it to the movie (which I had just seen then) and found that the novel went in its own strange directions. But years later I reread it and realized that it's one of the best horror novels I've ever read, but the film is rather weak and oversimplified.

Straub's a great, underrated writer- love SHADOWLAND, THE TALISMAN, and MYSTERY.

Mystery is a great novel, agree about him being underrated.

I just finished reading the book. I thought it was amazing. I saw the movie first, and I was intrigued by it, even though it's not very well made. The book had more characters and had a lot more going on than the simplified movie. Admittedly, Peter Straub is very long-winded. The book could have been a couple hundred pages shorter and been a masterpiece.

I thought the book was OK but it didn't change my life. You're spot on when you say that the novel could have been shorter. I actually said the very same thing to my brother just a couple weeks ago. Great minds and all that.

I really loved the book! It scared me pretty badly.
