Why no covering fire?


I understand the navy and artillery were supposed to soften up the Turks, but right before the bayonet charge, they didn't even have a single machinegun to suppress the Turks with? Or even have the infantry fire their rifles right before charging? That would at least buy a few valuable seconds of cover, wouldn't it?
