Where's the blu-ray?

Really wish this would come out on blu-ray. I've seen an "HD" version streamed through Netflix (I think), and it looked okay, but a well done blu-ray would be much better. I've been hoping Criterion would tackle this one for years. Anyone know of any reason this might be held back, other than the studio just not making it a priority? Who has the rights?

Pondering picking up the iTunes HD version for $9.99.

Willing to wager we'll get a Blu-ray release next year for the centenary of the campaign.

There's a new Gallipoli miniseries coming. It would make a lot of sense for this classic movie to hit Blu-ray around the same time. Especially since the SE DVD arrived on the 90th anniversary.

Do you have any information about the miniseries? I'd be very interested. I hope the USA gets it.

The Wikipedia page is pretty packed with info and links.

Sounds interesting. I just hope they don't mess it up and turn it into some bargain-basement production with cruddy CGI and drab combat sequences. It's a chance to show the true horror of Gallipoli. I've read the book on which they're basing the series, and the campaign sounds like hell. Millions of flies (they couldn't eat anything without getting a mouthful of flies), people killed on a daily basis, corpses strewn everywhere at various stages of decomposition... Etc. So, they better nail it.

Thanks for the information. I'm hoping that the DVD or Blu Ray will be available here sometime after its aired.

I agree that it shouldn't pull punches.

Agreed this needs a blu-ray release asap

However I wonder if Hollywood politics are playing a part in the delay... Mel Gibson is out of favour ?

Blu-ray is released in Australia in April, just in time for the centenary, exactly like I predicted.

There's a regular 2-Disc Blu-ray, and a 3-Disc commemorative set with a few extra goodies.

I'm a huge Mel fan, but I'm SO glad that Lee is on the cover too. Lee's scenes are so fantastic.

I hope that I can get the collectors dvd in USA or I'll move to Australia, tee hee

Unfortunately, it's a Region 2 disc, so of no use to us here in the States.

I can't fathom why one of the greatest war movies of all time, directed by a guy who went on to become a major Hollywood director and starring a guy who went on to become one of the biggest male stars in the US, still can't get a frickin Region 1 blu-ray release.

Dammit :(

I know right? Also, I have to add The Year of Living Dangerously, no blu-ray. I'm stunned that some of the worst films ever have a blu release but not these.

Confirmed to be region A/B/C (global): http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Gallipoli-Blu-ray/125128/

reply

Apparently not. I checked all of the sellers on Ebay and all of the Gallipoli blu rays on offer are Region B only :/

Stiil no blu-ray for the US. Come on Criterion, do this one! It would be a shame if they waited until Peter Weir was dead and couldn't participate in the transfer or any special features.

Please write to Criterion and suggest this title:
