Who called Alice that second time?

Alice is talking to her mother. Then later the phone rings again and she assumes it is her mother but it isn't. There is nothing on the other end of the phone and I think audiences are supposed to expect it to be the killer. Except for one thing, this is 1981. No one has a cell phone. You called through a pay phone or through your own home. Are we to expect it to be Jason on the other end of the line? I just can't see how that could be. Jason was outside of her apartment at this time.

How can anyone possibly answer this? You saw the same film we all did.

Out of all of the times I've watched this, I never really thought twice about it. Perhaps today's technology has been so ingrained that I never gave it a second thought, until now

Perhaps he was already inside the house?

I recall many a time pranking my family with the old rotary phones by holding in the switches and it ringing the house.

Thoughts?

Funny, in all these years, and as nonsensical as it sounds, I've always just assumed it was Jason calling from outside the house. That's the thing about these movies - I never give anything a great deal of thought.

I really just thought "uh oh - silence or heavy breathing with no answer is never good" - they did a good job just pulling the audience in with that dread-filled moment - I think the brain can just go into that fight or flight mode without second thought - total instincts start kicking in here
