All the Bond films ranked - Can For Your Eyes Only get more than a "meh"?

This guy doesn't really like FYEO, but he doesn't hate it either. What say you?

I believe its Moore's 2nd best Bond film. He proves he can play Bond in a serious manner. It has a From Russia With Love throwback feel.

It’s always been one of my favorites. The song is one of the best, the Bond girl is fierce, and the last third of the movie where they start climbing up the mountain is excellent.

reply

I think it's one of the better Bonds. I enjoyed seeing Roger Moore playing it straight for once. The rest of the Bonds he was in really camped it up, played just about everything for broad comedy. They were fun, but this one gave Moore a chance to show he could take it a little more seriously too.

reply

Agreed, although it still has some goofy stuff. This and The Spy Who Loved Me are the best Moore films (and my guilty pleasure of View to a Kill). Live and Let Die didn't have too much camp but it was sorta meh by 007 movie standards.

reply

Yeah. Pretty much every Bond movie does. They aren't what you'd call totally realistic.

It's hard to suspend disbelief though when, say, a bad guy is blown up like a balloon and then flies to the ceiling, like happened in Live and Let Die to Yaphet Kotto. That kind of thing was fairly common in Moore Bond movies.

Oh jeez. I forgot about that. Yep. Moore Bond is too goofy for me.

reply

It's my second favorite and my favorite with Moore.

This movie came out after Moonraker ("Bond in space!") which a lot of critics and fans hated. It literally lifted the camp factor right into the stratosphere.

Who can forget that awful bit with Jaws and his cute newfound gf cracking open a bottle of champagne as they are about to die plummeting to earth? Jaws -- previously mute in two movies to this point -- clinks her glass: "Well, here's to us..." Man, everyone in the theatre groaned hard at that one.

Anyway, after the blow back, the producers said they wanted to take Bond back to his more serious roots. Hence why this movie is one of the better Moore Bond movies.

reply

Actually technically, Moonraker lifted the camp factor way higher than the Stratosphere. But yeah Moonraker was not a good movie, it wasn't even good in a bad way.

For Your Eyes Only went back to the serious, harder edged tone of the early Connery films.

It was nice to see Moore play a more hard edge, serious Bond. The camp is almost gone, Bond is turning down sex, kicking cars off cliffs. I personally enjoyed Moonraker, but you couldn't get any more ridiculous than that movie, plus it cost a ton of money to make. FYEO is the most underrated Bond movie in my opinion. I think it eeks into the top 10.

reply

I love For Your Eyes Only, it is actually my 2nd favorite.

reply

It's among the best. An all-time classic.

As for the reviewer, his opinions are a bit spotty. He is anti-Spectre retcon which automatically gives him some credibility, but some of his rankings are absurd. I find him annoying. Come to think of it, I don't like any of the Bond reviewer channels on YouTube. The worst of all is that DutchBondFan guy. He is insufferable. A total moron.

reply

I dig this one, but I haven't seen it in awhile. It is one of the best Moore Bonds, if not the best.

reply

I just rewatched it after many years. I think its quite mediocre as are most of the Moore films.
