Does anyone watch this after the Spy Who Loved Me?

As it was intended at the end of that movie? I do.

reply

but then when do you watch Moonraker?

reply

It’s best to just ignore Moonraker

reply

Moonraker is fine, though Ayn Rand would have hated hit.

reply

I only briefly caught Moonraker many decades ago and never bothered watching it again. I laughed more than I should have, and more-so out of embarrassment than anything. It was so goofy.

In fact, I avoided For Your Eyes Only because of Moore's more goofy films, and I was not left with a very good impression after The Spy Who Loved Me.

reply

You should watch From A View to a Mill ..... It will have you cracking up altogether at numerous bits

reply

From A View To A Kill is my favorite.

reply

I like it too but not my favourite. Some great bits in it. The scenes with the zepplins are great. Love the shots of San Francisco bay. But Moore looks like a 007 that is ready for retirement or promotion to M status.

reply

Yes, I do agree that Moore was way too out of his league for this one but regardless it is still a fun adventure, Walken makes a great villain and John Barry was on his A game with this one.

reply

Does he looked as knackered as this guy:-

reply

Wow ..... that is a stark photo. He looks wild there. Moore was great back in the day, loved all his Bond films. Caught an episode of the Saint with him in it about the Loch Ness monster a few day ago, it was great too.

reply

Loved the Moore films as well, although, as you said, even at the time it was clear he was getting too old for it by the time of AVTAK. But it is funny to compare with Craig now, who I thought had surpassed Moore in terms of how knackered he looked by that last première.

Really weird you mentioned that Saint episode - Got a box set of the colour episodes for Xmas and that episode is one of the five or six I've watched so far! Slightly bizarre but funny - along with the giant ants in Wales episode not quite what I thought that show was...

reply

You should try it. It's Moore's only non-silly film. It actually reminds me of OHMSS in a few scenes. He actually shows fear.

reply

Yep! I actually did finally watch it and you're right... it was a great Bond entry and probably the most espionage-oriented Bond film to date. I loved all the double-crossing and information peddling used to backstab people throughout the film, it felt a lot more grounded in real-life espionage involving secret service rather than the more over-the-top stuff we're used to.

In my own humble opinion I felt like the film would have benefited more from someone like Timothy Dalton since it was more serious and no-nonsense than the other Moore films.

reply

True. Timothy would have been a better fit for the car kicking scene especially! Still not sure about that scene. I have mixed emotions but definitely out of character for Moore. I read he was reluctant to do it that way as well.

reply

That makes sense.

Moore also didn't like when Christopher Walken's Zoran gunned down all the mine workers near the end of the film.

I liked Moore's look and savvy charm, but he really wasn't Bond. For the goofy stuff and silly antics he was fine, but for the hard-nosed tasks it just didn't fit him.

I think the reason the car-kicking scene is so jarring is because Moore's Bond hadn't been that violent at any other point previous to that.

That scene wouldn't have looked anywhere near out of place in License to Kill or even in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, especially given how both Dalton and Lazenby were a little more likely to kill when pushed to do so compared to Moore's Bond.

The car-kicking scene definitely seemed out of place because Moore's Bond became vindictive and callous in that one scene when he wasn't that way in any prior scene in the film. Dalton's Bond, however? Oh, he seemed ready to embrace his evil side at a moment's notice, which makes sense given his portrayal of Bond was depicted as being in a profession that was kill-or-be-killed once the disguise was up.

reply

I agree. I think Moore looked too stuffy for 007. I think he would have made a better "M"
Yeah Dalton's Bond is ruthless. I actually felt bad for the bad guy at the end of License To Kill. But it was still a welcome change.

reply

No because this film is the sequel to Moonraker

reply

A very, very, very loose sequel.
