Deleted line in the dvd version

I have seen this in both vhs and dvd. In the vhs version, there's a voiceover where douglas says,"How would you like to be f---ed by a meatcleaver?"In the dvd version, that line is deleted[I think it's after they find the maid slashed up]. I did read in the Psychotronic filmguide,Bacall and Garner complained this line was put in without their knowledge and they objected to it. Could any of this have to do with it being deleted? Although i don't understand it omitted from the dvd version and not the vhs version.

When I saw the film on cable (the only time I've seen it), they left the line in, but just deleted the f-word. I really don't know why they deleted the whole line from the DVD; all I know is the line is in the original book, of which I own a copy. Great book, by the way. I loved the way the narrative took the form of letters between all the characters. That was very creative of Bob Randall (the book's author).

"The Fan" is not the only movie to have sounds cut out in the DVD releases. Rankin/Bass' "The Hobbit", "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", and "Jaws" (obvious in the whale song part; ironically it won the Oscar for Best Sound) all had their sound effects cut out and replaced.

I watched the movie on cable today and the line 'Dear miss Ross,How would you like to be *beep* with a meatcleaver' was in there.

I thought that was a line from this movie! I remembered the line because it always creeped me out. I rented the movie from Netflix because I had not seen it in ages. The line was not in the movie which made me think I was was mixed up about it coming from this movie.

I think as far as homevideo goes only the Paramount VHS release of 'THE FAN' has the meatcleaver line. I bought an old Paramount tape of 'THE FAN' recently for a few bucks on Amazon. Unless you see the movie on a cable channel that shows its films un-cut, I reckon 'THE FAN' can be bought for a low price on tape.

I purchased the HD version on iTunes (far better transfer than the DVD) and the line IS in this HD version.

Warner's Archive version released Nov. 2014 cuts the line out also.
