If only the gore was implied rather than shown!

After first watching this film a couple nights ago, I gave it only one star. But, my rating has since risen to 7, because it has all the elements that I like in a suspense film, with one or two exceptions: the gore and the burning! I mean, with classy Bacall in the film, I just had to like it. But, the slasher element was not necessary at all. Because it made a film that could have been a rather sophisticated, classy thriller into something more ghastly and sinister. And, that, I do not appreciate! I don't need to see all those blood-gushing scenes, etc.!

But, all that said, I like the film anyway. I just can't *love* it, which is a real shame. The way the killings should have been handled is that they should have been mentioned, not seen. We didn't need to see all that nastiness. We coulg have done without it!

I read elsewhere on this board that all the graphic scenes were added at the end of production and that they came as an unwelcome surprise to Bacall at the screening, when she first realized that the film had gone a whole other level of psychotic! I think she was expecting something a-la Hitchcock. And, this tells me that this film would have been perfectly fine without the slasher/slaying scenes. After all, Bacall, from what I gather, wasn't expecting them. So, perhaps it could be re-edited to have those nasty, unnecessary scenes removed?

I wish it would come out with a safer, PG-13 edited version. Then, I could really love it!

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Dick Smith's blood and gore effects were added in post-production. I guess with the recent success of FRIDAY THE 13TH, the producers wanted to hedge their bets.

Hey MyMovieRomance,

Being an old man, it is a bit embarrassing to admit I agree with your comments completely. When I was a kid, I used to like the horror films featuring Frankenstein and Dracula, but that all passed before I turned 21. For some reason, the "thrill" of such films became a really uncomfortable feeling for me, and this film with Bacall and Garner was the same.

The whole slasher bit was just way too uncomfortable for me. While I averted my eyes during these parts, I noticed my wife continued to watch. What does that tell me about her? Maybe I should keep one eye open while we sleep?

Best wishes,

@wile

Ha ha! Maybe she just likes slasher flicks, that's all.

I find it hard to believe that Bacall was surprised by the gore. If you watch it again you can see she was in some of the gore shots (Pop's body on the ground and Douglas dead in the chair with scalpel still in neck). She knew.
