If only the gore was implied rather than shown!
After first watching this film a couple nights ago, I gave it only one star. But, my rating has since risen to 7, because it has all the elements that I like in a suspense film, with one or two exceptions: the gore and the burning! I mean, with classy Bacall in the film, I just had to like it. But, the slasher element was not necessary at all. Because it made a film that could have been a rather sophisticated, classy thriller into something more ghastly and sinister. And, that, I do not appreciate! I don't need to see all those blood-gushing scenes, etc.!
But, all that said, I like the film anyway. I just can't *love* it, which is a real shame. The way the killings should have been handled is that they should have been mentioned, not seen. We didn't need to see all that nastiness. We coulg have done without it!
I read elsewhere on this board that all the graphic scenes were added at the end of production and that they came as an unwelcome surprise to Bacall at the screening, when she first realized that the film had gone a whole other level of psychotic! I think she was expecting something a-la Hitchcock. And, this tells me that this film would have been perfectly fine without the slasher/slaying scenes. After all, Bacall, from what I gather, wasn't expecting them. So, perhaps it could be re-edited to have those nasty, unnecessary scenes removed?
I wish it would come out with a safer, PG-13 edited version. Then, I could really love it!
Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!
