Actually...really well done...

I was pleasantly surprised by how well made this was. It came out the year after "Dressed To Kill" and I think it was definitely an attempt to cash in on that style of film. It even has the same musical composer and slick, high gloss look. What I thought was compelling was their confrontation at the end. It played out in a very interesting way. For a psycho-slasher flick, it was definitely better than your average. The murder of the gay guy was rather gratuitous. It never figures back into the plot. But on the whole it was kind of...elegant.

I disagree. In the movie Douglas Breen murdered the gay man and left the note to convince people that he (Breen) was dead. He wanted Sally Ross to come out of hiding and continue with his plan.

You are correct.

The OP is obsessed with the "gay" part of this movie. I am guessing he is so obsessed with it that he failed to understand the incredibly obvious and simple reason for the murder of the gay guy.

"It's Minnie Pearl's murder weapon."

I agree. And this was one scene that did stick with what went down in the novel.
