They were movies. If I recall correctly, Frank brought it to Sherry's attention by pointing out an advertisement for the movies that he noticed on a coworker's magazine.
Howard took pictures of her at first, as a way of making her comfortable with the camera. He took Polaroids and then later used a 35mm camera for more *ahem* professional shots. But when they were at the house, it was for movies.
As far as your question about was she having sex? Yes, although thankfully it wasn't all that clear. *gag* It was implied.

shareBy looking at the cover of the magazine he was holding it was probably a clearing house mag. They were very sketchy but were basically a mixture of amateur BUT legit porn but they would sneak in kiddie porn ads.
The language, on one hand, was covert just enough to make it seem like a "barely legal" porn (nubile nympho) but on the other hand were coded (lollipop lovers) to let the pedos know it was kiddie stuff. And in 1981 they had to be covert. Back in the 60's and 70's, sketchy porn mags were alot more blatant with kiddie stuff.
With a clearing house mag there is no direct communication/contact, it just gets forwarded to a P.O. Box that then forwards it again. Think of it like when Pesci (in Casino) had to change cars 5 or 6 times to get the cops off of his tail.
