How do you qualify as one? Do you decide one day to visit the guys down below because you're starting to go a little weird? Hi guys....can I live down here with you?

Interesting question.

I bet they weren't all crazy, either. Probably just a safety in numbers type deal. Get a rep for being crazy and people are much less likely to f with you (even hardened criminals). Multiply that by a couple hundred, and you're virtually invincible.

Until the real crazies suspect that you aren't one of them after all. Then all bets are off.

The movie never got into the 'crazies' but from the novel it was a type of nerve gas attack that made most people of crazy/rabid forcing the abandoning of Manhattan island & since there was a need to dump prisoners from the garden variety criminals to anti government dissenters they were dropped there as well

And what were rations like with the Duke? I always felt like Romero and a few other cronies looked to be with the crazies maybe before. Did the crazies find tbere way to the theater and eat everyone?
