I just wanted to say, that I have read the book as well as seen this movie and it makes me proud to be a Canadian to see how we helped out our American Cousins. I think a remake should be made of this movie, especially with the souring between US and Canadian relations the past few years, would be nice to have a remake made of a great part of Canadian history
Thats good news, I sure hope it sticks true to the orginal story and does not have the Hollywood spin put on things. Thank you for the update on a remake.
I had not heard a remake was being made, then I read your post and looked it up for myself. what a shame and a waste of a true historical moment between Canada and the USA, wish they would finally make a film about what actually happened instead of cutting out Canada's major role in this conflict.
The film "Argo" tells what couldn't be told before -- that this "caper" was a rescue mission camouflaged as a film production -- because until 1997, that information was classified.
Just saw "Argo" tonight, good to see the story complete with "declassified" information. Also nice to see the text at the end, giving credit to Canada and acknowledging what good things can happen when nations cooperate with one another.
Argo is heavily fictionalized...that plot bit was all fake, not real. "Escape from Iran" is far more true to the real story. As Jimmy Carter acknowledges, Canada did at least 90% of the work and took on most of the danger, as "Escape from Iran" correctly shows. "Argo" says it was almost all American and that Canada never did anything significant - an outright lie. Just because more declassified information is available (and actually, most of that is still classified; only WW II material has become available for the most part) , unfortunately does not guarantee a new version is better or more accurate. The reverse is true. "Argo" is a Hollywood fiction movie. Stick with "Escape from Iran", movie and book, for the true story.
I just saw "Argo" tonight. While it clearly added hyperbole to dramatize certain plot points and build up tension, I don't see how you can say that it indicates that the rescue "was almost all American and that Canada never did anything significant." Quite the contrary; I came away reminded of just how incredibly brave and honorable the Canadians were. They accepted extreme risks to help their fellow man in need. In addition, "Escape from Iran" is lacking certain facts as well because the CIA's involvement was not fully know until the information was declassified by the Clinton administration.
