Did she ultimately enjoy getting raped?

At the very end, when the Entity says "Welcome home *beep*

Carla SMILES.

I think she changed after getting an orgasm from the Entity, although
emotionally she was traumatized, physically she got off on it.

She even mentioned that she would 'surrender' herself to the Entity.

On the slim chance that you're not just a troll looking for a reaction, here's a bit of a rant...

No, she did not enjoy being raped.

Orgasm doesn't equal consent.

She didn't get an orgasm from the entity, she got one while dreaming, as she explained.

I don't understand how you can interpret her facial expression at the end as a smile. Her face tenses up, but that's definitely not a smile. It's a grimace, if anything, but it was more of a stony expression of tensing up for another encounter, trying to be brave.

In fact, I watched this movie because of this post of yours, to see if she did give an actual smile at the end... surprise, surprise, no, she didn't.

A little empathy for her is needed here, rather than identifying with the monster.

And I really do hope that you're just a troll, because otherwise you're a pretty delusional individual who should seek out a psychiatrist before you hurt someone. You seem like the type who believes that a woman is asking to be raped because of her outfit, or the type who thinks that it was not rape because she blinked once for yes.

I did a little browsing in your posting history, and you post a lot of misogynistic stuff over on the "Halt & Catch Fire" board and the "Angry Video Game Nerd" board. But more importantly, you seem like you are old enough to be alive in the 1980s (old enough to know better), and you don't seem like the type who says inflammatory things for the sake of a reaction.

So in case you're not a troll, or for anyone reading with the "blame the victim" mindset...

Just imagine someone that you don't find attractive hurting you. Forget the sex part. That's what someone who gets raped goes through. Just imagine someone kicking your ass. Why would you enjoy that? Unless you're a masochist. But she was not. But try to imagine any situation that you don't enjoy, and that you try to avoid.

As for the orgasm, imagine that you stuck your penis through a hole in the wall and the person on the other side gave you an orgasm. Now, imagine that the person is someone you find completely unattractive and terrible, maybe the wrong gender, I'm sure there's one person that you would never have sex with. You were tricked into it, like she was. Or someone you don't like molested you while you sleep. Now imagine that the person bites your penis, then stalks you and attacks you in front of people that you don't want to be vulnerable in front of. I'm sure that you don't have children, or at least I hope you don't-- but them, or maybe your buddies or minister or whatever person you try to impress in life. Are you going to smile when they kick your ass for the 17th time?

She was raped at her daughter's birthday party in front of her kids and sought help from anyone and everyone.

You seem pretty heteronormative, judging from your Eli Roth post, and Repugnican, judging from your Electric Car post, so I can imagine that if you let a woman give you fellatio, and then you found out that she had a penis instead of a vagina, you would find her murder at your hands justifiable.

It was implied in this movie, and stated outright in the real-life case, that it was her father who had been attacking her after he died. How would you feel if your dad raped you? Or mother? I'm hoping nauseated.

Kill Bill had the best symbolism for rape. It showed a mosquito landing on human skin and drinking blood. The mosquito was something to be killed, not something that is sexy in any way.

People seem to think that it's natural for a woman to enjoy being heterosexual sex, but being attacked is being attacked. She wasn't doing it for love or for money, and she was getting injured every time. So a woman having forced vaginal sex by a man isn't anymore enjoyable than you if got anally penetrated. I can't imagine that you would enjoy your penis getting played with if you were being beaten bloody and bruised and bitten and scratched at the same time.

I hope some of this is sinking in, and you seem smart enough that there's a chance, but I fear that you're too busy getting distracted by the sexual aspect of the violation, imagining how sweet it would be to get it on with a young Barbara Hershey. If the entire movie had been about a demon taking over a man's car while driving and trying to make it crash, I think that you would have understood it better.

So, in answer to your question: No. Just no.

It most certainly is a rant.

In fact, I watched this movie because of this post of yours, to see if she did give an actual smile at the end... surprise, surprise, no, she didn't.

Here it is, I zoomed in to her mouth, since this movie was made for the big screen:

You clearly see a smile forming in the corner of her mouth.

Barbara Hershey is an amazing actor, I think she wanted to leave this little 'clue' at the end to keep
the momentum going. She didn't give a 'frightened' look...but instead a microexpression of happiness
that she's back with the rapist demon.

Your 'glory hole' argument is stupid. It requires two consenting parties for the 'process' to work.

Also, I think everyone at one time or another have had sex with someone they don't want the rest of the world
to know. If a truly gross woman/man offered free sex to someone (straight/gay), chances are if no one else would know: We'd take up on the offer.

In all honesty, when I saw the movie on TV it did look like she was smiling, but I thought, it was because she was possessed and maybe that was implying there would be a sequel.

I found the movie, though, to be scary. There wasn't anything funny about it.

I think you're getting carried away as far as your comment to the OP.

He was just making a simple observation.

I don't think he was trolling nor do I think he was mocking the seriousness of the movie.

Um, she didn't 'enjoy' her rapes!

She was 'smiling' because she was determined to show the demon that it had not broken her!
Hence why she calmly walks over & deliberately opens the door that the demon has just slammed shut.
She was showing it that she was not beaten.

I never noticed a smile myself, but if she did then I think you're right, fiatlux. Perhaps she was happy because entering the house for the last time showed the beginning of a new life. The demon says "welcome home" as a way of saying "I've got you where I want you. You're mine now." But since it is no longer her home, she defies the demon by leaving anyways. I think she is happy because she no longer decides to live in fear and releases any hold the demon has over her. Maybe that's why the attacks were less frequent, too. Because it thrived off her fear and anxiety.

reply

Exactly. She was showing the entity that she wasn't going to give in to her fear. That she was done with letting him get to her and had not broken her.

This pretty much echoes her speech from just a bit earlier. Also, remember the first night the investigators were with her. The electricity starts and she reaches up into it, saying his power is weakening. This was because her fear was lessened once she had others who believed her.

Perhaps the stupidest question about a movie, ever.

No, no one enjoys getting raped. That's why it's rape.

Does it seem like the film would depict the horrific aspects of Carla's experiences, and her desperation to escape them, only to have her "surrendering to" and even enjoying getting raped by the demon? (I haven't seen the movie in a while but if I recall, the only time she hints at surrendering to it was when she was worried about it threatening her children.)

As another poster says, it seems to be an expression of challenge or defiance toward the Entity. Certainly not a, "Oh, so glad to be back with you" kind of thing.

I'm all for multiple interpretations but, seriously, the climax of the film showing she comes to enjoy it (no pun intended)?
