Well, they were an unusual, Bohemian/Hippy/Liberal type family, and seemed to have a really open, free parenting style. For example, the party they had at their house; it was really friends of their kids. They wanted to be the 'cool' parents, and have the house that all the neighborhood kids wanted to hang out at. It even looked like the mom was smoking pot along with all the kids! I think in the book their lifestyle is explained a bit more, but I haven't read it in a while.

Really surprised at how the parents in this film were portrayed as just so okay with everything and uninvolved with their teen kids in the beginning. And when Jade's mom sees them!? So weird. And the dad later, when he catches David in Jade's room, instead of bursting in there, he just walks away. That is not how parents are at all. I've never known any, no matter how "open" they are, to be okay with their 15 year old daughter to be sleeping around with a 17 year old boyfriend. That's just really irresponsible.
Um what? They weren't ok with everything. They argue a lot about the relationship with the teens. LOL you make it sound like Jade's mom was getting all sexual about seeing her daughter making love. She observed a tender moment and was happy for the daughter and then walked away. Jade's dad does want to burst through the door and beat up David, but he didn't do it because he knew the daughter would hate him which she later does when he forbids her to see him. They weren't ok with everything. He was a pretty domineering dad and a hypocrite like Jade said (which in real life would only push the girl to rebel even more)....

My mom was like that and the apartment always had parties, she is now hard core, hard Azz.
