so what was the deal....?

In the beginning of the movie everyone LOVED David. Then things just went sour.... Keith started getting annoyed with him, then hated him all together once he got too close with Jade. The father found out David and Jade were sleeping together and got completely mad/jealous. David ended up getting banned from the house and forbidden to see Jade. The only one who liked David throughout was the creepy Mother who we found out later had the hots for him and wanted to bang him herself..

But I guess what my question is, is... why did they just start having him? Was it really because of Jade's involvement with David? Or was it that they were just sick of him being around? Or was it that they werr sick of him sucking up to everyone?

...and seriously what was up with the ending of this movie? Did David just completely go crazy and start imagining Jade?

The book goes way more into detail, but basically Jade's father got sick and tired of seeing David hang around the house all the time AND have open sex with his 15 year old daughter under his roof. They liked him at first and sure he was "part of the family", but David took it too far and over stayed his welcome. When it started to affect Jade's school work and sleep habits then Hugh put his foot down. Meanwhile Ann was all gaga over David and not acting like the mother she should have been so it got even more out of control.

As for the end, no David wasn't imagining Jade. He was locked up (for who knows how long) and yet still obsessing and talking about her. He was not ready to give her up. We see a shot of her walking towards the institution like she wants to talk to him and maybe give him a second chance or at least be friends.

In the book she completely moves on and eventually marries someone else. David remains in the psychiatric ward developing a few relationships with various other inmates but he never lets go of Jade or his obsession.

I know the book delves more into the psyche of the characters...but if you're asking from a standalone movie point of view, I'd have to put it down to the fickle nature of Jade's family.

They were portrayed (in the movie) as uber-liberal progressives (and very over affectionate/familiar with each other, almost bordering on incest) Whilst they had little issues with having bohieimeam parties (replete with casual marijuana smoking) their latter eleventh hour turn-against David, was part of their hypocritical nature. It's mentioned that Keith (James Spader) initially brought David into the fold (so to speak) but their eventual upset with him, was likely due to their narcissistic boredom that David was (all-too-easily) subservient to them (with his try-hard demeanour)

They likely used Jade's sleep disorder as a convenient excuse, to move their daughter on to a new suitor (and the gratification they could deride from getting a newcomer to jump through emotional 'hoops' to fit in with their 'family unit')
