Yep, he's right. Stills and Nesmith go way back. Nesmith commented about this when the video came out in '81.

Actually, Stephen Stills tried out for the Monkees, but they didn't think he quite had 'the look' (bad teeth, or something - I don't exactly remember).So he suggested to his buddy, Peter Tork, that he try out. Peter did, and got the part.
Better than than Crosby, Tork, Nash, and Young.
