rainbow flags

Anyone notice the repetition of the rainbows throughout the film? The rainbow flag and the rainbow decal Joanne's room? Thought this was interesting, I don't know if the director had a point in putting them in there or not...

I don't think it meant then what it means now. I could be wrong however.

No, you're absolutely right. The "gay flag" has six colors, and the rainbow flags in this film have seven, which represents the seven colors on the light spectrum (remember Roy G. Biv?). Rainbow flags have been used by a variety of organizations and people for a variety of purposes,

Being a gay horror fan I found this very interesting, even though it probably isn't meant to be the LGBT flag. :)

If thats the case, I'd like this movie even more :)

The Pride flag was created about 30 years ago, but I doubt the flag in this movie represented the same ideals.

It's an interesting question. Of course, I don't know for sure, but it may be. The flag was adopted in 1978, so it would have been relatively new at the time. However, this movie is essentially a UCLA student film, and one might imagine university students at the forefront of social causes.

Unlike in most slasher movies, the main cast are not your typical hormonal young people looking to have sex at every opportunity. In fact, they seem to be "good kids", actually in the midst of doing volunteer work. The flag might just be an indication that they are into "causes", or perhaps just the director's (or someone's) small nod to that particular cause.

Or, it could mean more. The sexuality in the movie, unlike most slasher films, is very muted. The flag could be a hint that they're not interested in each other "in that way". In that vein, given the ending, it might also be seen as one of the many examples of misdirection in the film.

Or it might just be a bit of color thrown in to perk up the rather drab scenery.
