Finding it?

Well, I've read the reviews, ogled the cast list, and now you've got me interested.

...So how the heck does one get ahold of this movie?

reply

Forget it... I've been looking for 7 years for an uncut VHS copy (DVD? What's that?) of this film and never managed to find one... Sad!

There actually appear to be a few sites selling obscure horror movies that have DVD-R's for $15 or $20. They say it's an uncut English dub version with Dutch subtitles. I'm a bit too tightfisted (and without quite enough knowledge of the movie) to give it a try myself, but I thought I'd mention in case you haven't come across those.

I've just found my old UK VHS copy of this film and am very keen to re-watch it, but I believe this release was cut - no idea by how much. Anybody out there know?

One day this may get an official DVD release, I'll keep my fingers crossed....

I found mine at www.dvdobscura.com . It is a DVD-R. There they call it Dr. Jekyll and His woman, but on the case shown it says Docteur Jekyll et les Femmes.

Got my DVDR from Trash Palace. The title is Dr. jekyll and His Women and is the English version with Dutch subs (can't be removed). The label says Widescreen: it isn't.

It's supposed to be uncut and I believe that. Occasionally scenes seem to be missing, or events seem to have taken place, or are taking place, off-stage - I put all this down to Borowczyk's anarchic editting.

As the plot takes place in Edwardian London (I presume, as they have a telephone) some of the dubbing is fine and use the actual actors' voices, but characters have been dubbed by Americans and sound completely out of place (Howard Vernon's sounds the worst - a much younger voice).

Around 1991 to 92 I remember purchasing a vhs copy (not an original) from some company that sold hard-to-find or obscure movies. This was the age of the VHS, before dvd's existed.

I just remember that, one, this was a real FREAKY movie, worth watching because it was so d-mn creepy freaky. There was the Doctor Jekyll, but Mr. Hyde was not what you think. Instead of a ugly, squat, vicious man, Mr. Hyde was tall, well-proportioned, actually somewhat dapper handsome if it wasn't for his odd haircut which resembled the ancient Norman knights with its straight across the forehead bangs. But two, the video clarity and quality of the vhs tape was so crappy and dismal that it ruined the viewing experience. I could barely make out the images on the tape. And I remember the movie settings were so dark all the time, which made it even worse. The vhs wasn't even worth keeping and I think I gave it away to someone. This revisionist better-looking Mr. Hyde was a different kind of evil man, more in the suave, more cultured Dracula type, not the street thuggishness of the typical Mr. Hyde.

Still, if some company can digitally re-master an original copy, it would be worth buying a dvd copy. I recommend it.

The original UK VHS tape was censored by the BBFC and made this movie quite hard to follow. The uncut 92 minute version was cut by 1 minute 55 seconds for theatrical release in the UK in 1984. When the film was submitted to the BBFC for video release in 1987 this already censored version was cut by a further 44 seconds. So, the VHS video The Blood(bath) of Dr Jekyll is missing over 2 minutes of footage!

Does anyone know where to download it for free?

That's just my two cents.

I'm sorry to laugh, but your username is the last name I'd expect to not only be on this board, but to have watched the movie...

I just bought a copy on Blu Ray! Ordered it through a local media-exchange store. It was not cheap ($39.99 US) but worth it (I hope)

reply

Yeah but is it uncut? At that price it better be.

reply

It is uncut.

It is uncut, and looks fantastic. The blu is from Arrow Video and so boasts a hefty amount of supplemental material. By now, you will be able to find it for $20-25 US.
