Cult movies 3

I first came across a reference to this film in 1989 when I was lucky enough to get Cult Movies 3 by Danny Peary for a Xmas present.
I then was fortunate enough to see the film in 1990 at the Glasgow film theater with some student friends and fell in love with it.
I'll admit it's probably all surface and hard to fathom out what it's intentions are, but you can't help be carried along by the wonderful direction and admire the stunning art direction.
I'd love to hear from other fans of the film, what your opinions of it are. I find it funny, exciting, romantic, sad and happy. I think it's a great offbeat movie, well cast with a fresh story. I was not so enamored with Betty Blue, perhaps his (Beineix) best known film. Sorry if that offends anyone, yes it's as well directed and as stylish as Diva and I'd recommend it to anyone, I just was put off by the reasons a lot of people went to see it (the nudity) and didn't think this film had or merited a cult, as Diva found.
I'm not sure if I am full blown cult follower of this film though, as can only count the number of times I've seen it on one hand. Though for those of you that have seen it hundreds of times and skipped weddings/births/christenings to see it, I salute you!

As you said it is a great offbeat movie but it didn't lose its direction with all the good guys being "cool" it made me become involved with the characters. What disappoints me about so many films is that the characters' personalities are so wafer thin that I couldn't care less about them or what happens to them so I find it hard to become engrossed in the film. Richard Bohringer is a fantastic actor and holds the whole thing together.

It's more than surface. There's genuine feeling in Cynthia's refusal to record - you seldom see a MacGuffin that really means so much to someone - and I find it touching the way Gorodish and Alba decide to look after Jules, who isn't much more than a casual acquaintance. The mysterious character of Gorodish is fascinating too, the way a guy who spends his time with a giant jigsaw manages to outwit everyone and end up with what looked like a case full of gold ingots.

I didn't like Betty Blue either. Women who like sex must go mad, yeah, right.
