I really enjoyed this movie

I don't know what impresses the guy who wrote the nasty review of this film. I don't think its cliched at all. In fact I find it quite refreshing. I believe it to be highly original and engaging.
Wes composed some beautiful shots in this film and the director of cinematography did some wonderful plays with light and darkness. The beautiful blue Texas sky has never looked so beautiful and so menacing at the same time.
The characters are really what sold me on this one though. I didn't agree with the misongynisitc innuendos the other reviewer felt this movie contained. If anyone comes out looking bad in this film it is Isaiah and the Hitites practice of turning family members out of their lives. Maren's character is a strong role because she will not be cowed by all the men around her who want her to run or sell the farm. Sharon's character is a hoot, yes she goes a bit nutsy but that's to be expected but in the end she pulls it together and saves her friend's life. I loved it when Maren punched her out because that was instinctual. I wish more scream movie heroines would give the whiner character a reality cheque like that one! I really enjoyed Susan Buckner's character and her portrayel of her. She perfectly played the voice of reason, while still trying to brighten up her girlfriends. I loved her scenes with Jeff East, who wouldn't want to corrupt him? He's gorgeous and innocent!*SPOILER* I felt their death scenes were intense and tragic, when Susan finaly thinks she's escaped but turns to see her car is on fire, her last line "Oh my god", gets me everytime. It's not very often you feel bad for characters in a horror movie, nowadays audiences would rather cheer on the killer than its victims. Susan's character's death was truly upsetting.
I didn't find this movie confusing in the least. The reviewer that trashed this film thought it to be muddled. What's to be confused about? It's not rocket science... and you saw it three times?

I contacted Susan Buckner in 2002 about the film. She was very gracious and impressed that she was being remembered for her role as Vicky. She told me that there has been plans to make the film into a DVD. She does own some cassettes, but decided not to part with them. She is a very beautiful lady. I am surprised that her career did not go farther, as did Sharon Stone's career. The way DVDs are going, "Deadly Blessing" should be on DVD soon. Check Wes Craven's official site for more information. I have been a Susan Buckner fan since I saw her in that movie!

No *beep* shiot!
I LOVE her in this movie! REALLY! She is so HOT in this film, and she was probably the best part of this film!
How did you go about contacting her? I did my own speech on this film! TWICE!
First was for a vocabulary class, and the next was for a debate team competition!
Both was acclaim!
this movie really does mean that much to me!
LONG LIVE VICKY ANDERSON!

When you contacted the lovely Susan Buckner about "Deadly Blessing", what were her exact details on the dvd release of the film? I've been waiting so long for it, and I'm beginning to lose hope!

reply

I went to Pinecrest Elementary school where she now heads up the Drama Club, and was in every show that I could be in. She is an extremley nice person, and I learned a lot from her. I could probably still get in contact with her.

reply

I consider this one to be one of Craven's best. Next to The Hills Have Eyes that is.

If you can look her up again, let her know that she has some devoted fans out there who would love a "Deadly Blessing" DVD in the future. Maybe she has some updates on this topic...

Where I can found this movie?

I may order it but i don't know, i don't have a visa card, i'm only proceeding via money order or check.

Video stores are so idiot, they sell out all the tapes and they are not ordering at least 1 version of the DVD.

If someone can help me finding rare dvds or tapes, will be very appreciated!

reply

Try Ebay. That's where I found a copy.

It has been years since I have seen this movie but I remember a car scene that scared me and stayed with me for a long time. Would like to see again if I could get a DVD copy. Does anyone know if the movie was once entitled The Incubus?

reply

actually, there is a different film called The Incubus. I watched The Incubus many years ago, and I remember falling asleep. There's a profile for the Incubus on this site. Both films were made in 1981.

reply

Yes I remember a movie called The Incubus and was under the impression it was this movie Deadly Blessing. I was surprised to come across this site. I am glad that I know now the movie. Can you briefly tell me the plot summary of The Incubus?

The movie I'm thinking of has scenes where a man is killed by a tractor, then I remember the spider, I remember the guy Michael Berryman (Hills Have Eyes) being in trouble for losing his boot. Then I remember an ending where these two women are fighting.

I remember this woman standing in the house and looking up at the cobweb (a theme in this movie) and a spider coming down or some creature coming down.

Are these all scenes from the movie Deadly Blessing?

I hate the county. This movie shows you why I hate the county and farmland. I really like how Craven used that to great scare effect. One of the most underrated horror flicks I've seen. Another good one by Craven is the Serpent and the Rainbow.

I think the cinemtograph was the highlight of this film. Unfortunately, the story left me cold, and I didn't have much emotional investment in the victims to care when they died. 5/10 stars from me.

reply

So did I. I think it was a decent look at repression in religion, and was a good and spooky horror movie to boot. Loved the bits with the snake and the spider. Fine cast; Ernest Borgnine was great as the ultra strict, judgmental Isaiah.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

reply

I thought this film was pretty good, but it falls apart with that cheap and tacked-on "Carrie"-inspired stinger surprise ending that's seriously at odds with the more reality-based events that occur before it. 7 out of 10 from me.

I am the Duke of IMDb bio writers! I am A#1!

I loved it as well. Creepy, atmospheric and Ernest Borgnine was great :) Classic Craven flick.
