Need Help Understanding the Plot

I have done substantial reading on Solidarity so I understand that part. But I am lost as to the story line between Winkel, Maciek father and son, Agnieska and the older lady. Why is Agnieska in prison? How long has she been there? I do not watch many foreign films so the subtle nuances go right by me plus having to rely on the subtitles. Is the Maciek character based on an actual person killed in the December, 1970 confrontation. Thanks for all help, Joan

The plot itself is not that important -- what counts are the big issues at stake here:

What's more important doing right thing and paying for it dearly or doing wrong (or not doing anything) and living in relative calm with guilty conscience.

Father went through similar experiences before and realized that nothing can be done so seeing his son going through the same experiences he was trying to teach him that nothing can be done.

The son was stubborn and payed dearly -- probably if not for Agnieszka's support he would give in and chose broken-conscience road.

Agnieszka was arrested as many people in those times because she got on the train back to Gdynia/Gdansk.

Because entitling the thread "Need Help Understanding the Plot" wasn't enough of a clue that things about the plot might be given away in the discussion

Watch Man of Marble first, which is all about Agnieska and Maciek's father.
