Pop. 1275

The movie is based on the Jim Thompson book, "Pop. 1280". However, Lucien describes a sign that says "Pop. 1275". Why the discrepancy? Is this explained in the book? If not, any other thoughts?

In the interview with Tavernier in the Criterion edition, he talks about how the French mysteriously changed the title of the book from "Pop. 1280" to "Pop. 1275". He had no idea why they did it, and I don't know why he has Noiret's character say 1275, but he was amused by the "loss of five souls" and probably put it in there just to be cheeky.

There is no discrepancy. 6 people died in the movie.... 5 of them had souls. In french it refers to 1275 souls.
