Continental Divide is four stars

That's four stars out of four stars.
The best movie John has been in....Blair too for that matter.

My favorite line: I want to stay here only marginally more than I want to die trying to escape.

I agree, hands down

I first saw this upon its initial release - a new John Belushi movie, sure, no questions asked. I was blown away. I practically had tears in my eyes (as a then-18-year-old guy, for that matter) when he gives her a tour of Chicago and they have that talk. Very moving.

As crazy as this sounds, emotionally speaking, I haven't been able to watch it in a good many years. Number one, there are memories of my relationship at the time, and number two, Belushi's very-soon-after death. I have the tape, sitting in one of my closets. Maybe I'll get the guts........

Great movie. Watching Belushi, Farley, Candy, the big boys of comedy is always good but hard. Belushi and Farley especially because thier time was too early. This movie was great. Really showed the versatility and emotions that Belushi brought to the screen as a dramatic actor. When you put that much heart and soul into comedy it's apparant that you can do drama. Blair Brown was great and I must say, awfully sexy.

I too, thought it was excellent.
I wondered why it didnt get more play at the box office, and the only reason I can think of is that the public just didnt want to accept Belushi in any other role than his Animal House/Samurai Hit-man etc. performances. He did an excellent job in this one, and was highly believable.

My favorite is Neighbors (1981) - John Belushi's last movie. Blues Brothers is my second favorite. This probably wins third place. Animal House is over-rated. 1941 was a bomb. He didn't have many other memorable roles...

I thought Animal House was way too stupid - despite all these friends of mine saying "aw, man, what are ya talking about - it's great!" Not really. I go in and out with the Blues Brothers, there are a lot of scenes I like, but some it was pretty lame, getting only a grin and a chuckle here and there. I did love Neighbors as much as Continental Divide. These two roles showed great versatility on Belushi's part. Nearly 25 years after his death, I still can't help but wonder what roles he'd be playing today. I have some ideas:

Sipowicz on NYPD BLUE

maybe a guest shot on The Sopranos

Sam the Banker or Garrett Breedlove in Terms of Endearment

Detective Gracey in "Serial Mom"

A Woody Allen movie, perhaps.

Anything could've been.

NO! FORGET IT! I'M NOT GONNA MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER I'M TOO MAD

It's a cult classic that's been played to death on network TV. I don't like the extended cut. I think it adds a LOT of junk. The theatrical version works better. Which version were you talking about?

I agree. This is a wonderful movie. The thing I like about this movie the most is that it is the only movie John Belushi made where he actually plays a regular guy, you know what I mean. John spent the majority of his brief film career playing borderline cartoon characters but Ernie is a regular guy who gets up, puts his pants on one leg at a time and goes to work.

I agree with all statements above, this is a GREAT movie, I just love it ! Great dialogue, great acting and timing, believeable characters, well photographed and immensely entertaining. Lawrence Kasdan worked on a couple of great movies in the beginning of his career (eg. BODY HEAT) (but not now anymore).

I agree, also. As a Chicago area native, I always like seeing our people make good. I saw this when it first came out, and watched it again last night. Too bad John was gone so soon. He really had a great career ahead of him.

Tooooo baaaaad, indeed ! I just LOVE to watch them few movies here and there again; what a loss for the entertainment world. :-((((

First time I saw Continental Divide I was on a jet flying back from a month long trip to NY. It was a memorable trip because I recall telling my mother that the next time she heard from me it would likely be to announce that I was getting married. I loved the movie, loved Belushi's roll, and fell in love with Blair Brown. I've got a thing for strong, intelligent, totally independent woman and Nell Porter fits my roll of being nearly perfect in all aspects. Ernie Souchak was certainly an off beat roll for Belushi but I think it show cased the man's talent: He was not a one dimensional comedian. Listening to John Landis and Harold Ramis reminisce about Belushi on the Director's Cut DVD provides some real insight to Belushi. I'll never understand how a man can be so talented and so well liked yet feel totally and completely alone. Blair Brown's character was the perfect opposite of Belushi in real like. Nell Porter was able to live miles from the tiniest settlement and go for months without seeing a soul yet never feel alone while Belushi in life was surrounded by people who genuinely cared for him and yet he felt unloved and unwanted. I recall seeing Dan Aykroyd shortly after Belushi had died and the man was in tears. It's been more than 25 years and I watch John Belushi and although I never met the man I miss him and I am sad that he didn't make more movies. Anyway, Continental Divide is a terrific romantic comedy; one of the best show casing opposites who find attraction in their differences.

Oh, and for those who don't think much of Animal House you ought to know that you're in alone in a tiny minority. Animal House was a mile stone movie and set the tone for every raunchy college movie to follow. Each tries to attain the level of Animal House but most fall far short. Animal House has a great rock and roll score and is funny on so many levels I can watch it over and over again and find something new and different depending on my mood.
