Infinitely better than that Jason Momoa garbage!

I just think that our definition of what a barbarian is and is not is kinda skew.

I agree with you that the 2011 remake was a total crapola but I wonder if it is for the same reason?

For example, I thought Jason Momoa character was a little long winded. Not musclular enough. Too happy, go lucky. Thought too much about his place in the world and how he fitted into it. Not elemental enough.

The 82 version did not, at least to me, make Conan a dumb fighter but I thought a deep and brooding one where speech was not needed to convey the thought. Like when the princess told him that Doom was coming to kill them all. Or the way that Conan ever said only 5 words total to Valerie during to whole movie but you knew without a doubt that she was his only female love. His prayer to Crom, asking for help but yet at the same time not really expecting any.

Both storyline had their problems but I thought that the 82 version was the more elemental version. He wasnt out to save the world or any other reason so noble as that. He wanted revenge, pure and simple. Anything else was just gravy. He did what he did and he went about it the way he did because he was driven by revenge, at first for his people, then at then end for his love AND his people.

I really dont think that Conan would care one wit about saving the world. He would care about saving one person at a time but the whole? I think that even though Conan was a very smart and well learned individual, the whole saving the world midset is beyond his understanding. Or maybe he just sees beyond that. Or maybe its just me.

Either way, the 2011 version, I thought, was too complex for a simple barbarian to comprehend. It needed to be more elemental, more feeling and less thought, more of what Crom gifted to the people of Cimmeria - Strength of their sword arm and Fire in their heart.

I guess what Conan prayed to Crom said it all for me between the two movie. I just dont see the 2011 version of Conan saying the same prayer - "Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!"

Definately ... Arnies Conan is on a different level to that hollywood crap remake.
I was about 12 when i 1st saw the film and watched it again last night on Film 4 and its still awesome.... This and Predator are Arnies best films.

The new version, along with how Conan acts, is right out of the original books. This version, and Arnold, look and act nothing like Conan.

You guys like this movie, not Conan.

This is true. I DO like the 1982 movie. It's one of the most spiritual films I've ever seen. So much can be said without speaking - I think that concept is lost in today's films.

Now if it had just been a better movie!

Conan in 2011 version looked like a mellod surfer. Movie was painfully boring, and for a sword&sorcery flick is a death sentance.

Ours is the Fury!

100% agreed. The new version had its interesting moments, but few and far between, and not at all memorable. The 1982 Conan had a charm and a magic that cannot be put into words, and one of the finest scores in the history of the adventure/fantasy genres. So many things worked well in the '82 version. Plenty of things worked in the new one, but just not well enough to merit rememberence. Tis a shame.

If they decide to make a new Conan movie with Arnold (they're working on it), FOR GOD'S SAKE DO NOT MAKE IT PG-13!!!!!! Make it gritty, raw, and savage. That kind of thing set the scene for the 1982 version quite well, and it would not have been nearly as good without all that R rated goodness. If you can see and understand the barbarism and medievel savagery that the characters are standing up to confront, you invest yourself in them to a much greater degree. If you never suspect the characters are in any real, palpable danger, its hard to give a **** about them.
