So dissapointed in Thulsa Doom

...it turns out he couldn't fight for shyte. When he and his gang raid Arnie's childhood village, you think he's this bad a$s warrior, but in the final battle among the stonehenge place he does sweet FA while all his men are slaughtered by Arnie, a Mexican and a mad Asian bloke, and then in the final snake scene atop his great temple, Arnie just basically kerb stomps him. Booooo!

Fighting is clearly not his forte, his strength seems to be in his ability to control his followers. He IS a bad a$s, though, when it comes to beheading helpless women or shooting them in the back with snake arrows. He also tries but fails to shoot the Princess with a snake arrow but is foiled by Subotai. And then there's the girl he kills by luring her to fall to her death. I can't think of any men that were shown being killed by Doom directly. Best not to be a woman if you're around Doom! So although he's not a great warrior, I do enjoy James Earl Jones as the villain, he really nailed the part.

You somewhat have a point...but, you are neglecting that he tried to charm Conan before he died, and he even succeeded at doing so for a few seconds...but then Conan snapped out of the spell. So my point is, contrary to what your OP implies, it's not like Thulsa did nothing at the end.

And another thing to keep in mind is the Riddle of Steel theme. When Conan was a child, Thulsa had faith in steel. When Conan was an adult, Thulsa no longer had faith in steel and instead had faith in flesh (hence his confidence that he could charm Conan into doing his bidding at the end).

If they were to have made Thulsa into a steel-wielding warrior in the final scene like you want, then that would open up a huge can of worms in terms of making the film thematically incongruent.

...a Mexican ...
LOL! Gerry Lopez is Hawaiian. I know, the moustache confused you. 🐭

reply

Don't laugh too hard because, although Gerry was born in Hawaii, he's not Native Hawaiian (at least not full blood). His surname 'Lopez' is the fifth most common Hispanic surname; and Mexico is the largest majority-Hispanic country of North America.

I agree that it was a bit offensive to casually refer to Subotai (Gerry's character) as "a Mexican," but Gerry DOES appear Latino and has a common Hispanic surname.

To those who have power of the dark side. Fighting is overrated.

You left out Valeria, who had become a Valkyrie. Wonder Woman herself would have been hard-pressed with THAT babe. “Do you want to live forever?”

reply

Thulsa Doom's dialogue implies he was a warrior during the time that he wanted to solve the Riddle of Steel (thus the raid on the Cimmerians, stealing the sword, killing Conan's mum) but then gave all the stuff up when he became a cult leader.
