Sound Club - Genthiner Strasse

Hi, I lived in Berlin 1977-80 and Sound became my second home. It was the only club in town those days that played progressive, new wave and rock music. The sound and light system there was second to none in Europe and trust me, the place rocked every night it was open. I am writing a novel about my young (19) adventures in Berlin and would love to hear from anyone who went to Sound and has similar memories of a great club and the wonderful people who went there. My local (Berlin) girlfriend introduced me to the club and we all shared a flat up in Alt Moabit. There will be those who ask the question did I ever meet any of the real people in Christiane's film? The answer is yes and we did take time out to help them when we could, but afraid 'H' is always the stronger influence and the rest of the tragic tale you all know. What I can confirm to those interested is that the film is so accurate it is haunting.
The scenes in Sound were filmed down there and I can spot a few familar faces when I watch the film today, it really is like opening a moving photograph album on your past life. I do hope to make it back to Berlin one day, although I know Sound burned down years ago which is sad, because nothing could ever replace it. I remember the young people of Berlin with such great fondness and love, all of them were so friendly and had such fire and spirit in thier hearts. I guess that will not have changed, it is in the air you know, Berliner Luft.

A nice post with no reply. I was wondering what kind of music they were playing back then at the 'Sound.' I've read they had prided themselves in playing 'progressive music' - does that mean prog rock, like Genesis, King Crimson and stuff like that? Did they play punk by the end of the 70's?

Will you post when you've completed the book? Sounds very interesting.

to halt confusion- I don't have a signature!

Wow, thank you very much for sharing this inside perception on the film and also the real life events.
I have so many questions unanswered and am very interested in the late '70 Berlin undeground scene. So if you finish the novel, please post it, I'd love to read it.

You must have a lot of great stories to tell from that time. Please let me know when it's finished.
