The Rabbi not talking to his son but he asks him Talmud questions?

In the beginning of the movie, after Reuven goes to one of the Rabbi's shabbat sessions and asks Reuven to answer some Talmudic questions, Danny says that usually his father asks him. This seems to me to contradict the premise that the Rabbi does not talk to his son. Is there an exception when it comes to Talmud?

He doesn't talk with his son about emotional matters. It's explained near the end of the movie.

Rabbi Saunders speaks to his son when he has to, like you can see that he speaks to the younger son. he also can speak about religious matters. the silence is called in Judaism 'Taanit dibur' and it means that you avoid speaking about earthly matters.
