Ushers in the mediocre era of Cheech and Chong films

True, there are some clever bits and some of the premises are funny (the "ice cream" truck comes to mind), but compared to first two C&C films, this movie is a downer. The cast from the first two are here and everything should work, but it just doesn't. Suffering from lazy writing and moments of sheer absurdity (e.g. Stacy Keach turning into a lizard), the movie meanders through several ridiculous plots, using realistic and unrealistic devices and situations along the way. For the sake of viewing the complete, original 1978-1981 Cheech & Chong "trilogy", all fans should see "Nice Dreams" at least once...sadly, unlike 1978's "Up In Smoke" or 1980's "Next Movie", this is by and large forgettable. While a little bit better than what was to follow with the likes of "The Corsican Brothers" and "Things Are Tough All Over", "Nice Dreams" seemingly ushered in the beginning of the end for the (otherwise) brilliant comedic stoner duo's film career.

I agree that Things Are Tough All Over and Corsican Brothers were subpar, but I do not believe this movie was the turning point. There are more than a couple scenes that are funny whether you are baked or not. I've never laughed so much in my life after C&C wake up in the asylum (following the Hamburger Man) and are startled awake by the patients. Cheech's priceless comment: "Let's get out of here. This place is wierd, man." That is still comic brilliance in my mind, plus Mike Hammer was in this one as well.

Yeah, there are some great memorable moments, but comparatively they are few and far between...Still believe this film is nowhere near the quality of "Up In Smoke" or "Next Movie", which were two of the funniest comedies of the late 70s-early 80s. Interesting observation: of the first 3 films, the "Nice Dreams" DVD is ALWAYS the cheapest one of the bunch at virtually any DVD retailer (in the U.S. anyway). I paid $20+ for "Next Movie" when it came out, $15 for "Up In Smoke", and $4.99 (regular non-sale price ) for "Nice Dreams".

reply

At the Best Buy near my house , Up In Smoke goes for $9.99, Next Movie is $10.99 and Nice Dreams and Still Smoking I believe are $8.99. each. You got ripped out wherever you got your DVDs.

reply

No, sorry, I didn't get ripped off, as older DVD releases are more expensive the first few days/weeks they are out, and then they gradually go down in price (nice try though)

I have to disagree, I felt next movie had a lot of weak points too, in fact I would say I like Nice Dreams better than Next Movie. There are several weak scenes but the good scenes like the asylum and the police station make up for the scenes that drag.

reply

I agree. Nice Dreams wasn't the greatest, but Next Movie was worse.

reply

I actually like this one the best, and have a hard time even getting through the first two. What's wrong with sheer absurdity and ridiculous plots, especially in a dope movie?

reply

I used to NOT like Nice Dreams when I've first watched it, now looking back I realized that it's not a bad movie but it's hardly a great movie compared to Next Movie and Up in Smoke, it did get boring towards the middle but it started getting good again in the end, on a scale of 1-10 I give Nice Dreams a 7, I do agree with you that this was the beginning of the end for the Cheech and Chong movies.

You fail. Nice Dreams is the best one. Things Are Tough All Over=funny, Still Smokin=funny, the Corsican Brothers=funny, Get Out of My Room=funny. You suck at being a Cheech and Chong fan.

reply

Yeah......gotta agree with chuffcom.....Nice Dreams is one of the best, if not the best.

The swimming pool scene is one of the funniest ever

reply

I think Nice Dreams and Up in Smoke are the best of all the C&C movies. Nice Dreams is really under-rated.

reply

A-Ride-in-the-ocean, how did you like Next Movie?

I actually thought this was the best Cheech & Chong movie.Up in Smoke is second and Next Movie is third, imo.Still Smokin was my least favorite but I havent seen Corsican Bros(which I hear is the worst) or Things Are Tough All Over

I disagree. I think the one where they are in Amsterdam ("Still Smokin"?) was worse than this one, and it came out before. So, if anything, Nice Dreams was the start of a comeback. Corsican Brothers and Things Are Tough All Over were bombs and they haven't recovered, since.

reply

Nice Dreams has enough redeemable moments to be the 2nd best in the franchise. Next Movie was good until Cheech's obnoxious role as a redneck hippy took face on the screen. Still Smokin' for the most part was pretty awful and didn't even feel like a movie, but rather a compilation of dull skits.

I recommend seeing it more than once .. Gets better every time and has really aged well .

reply

I think Corsican Brothers and Things Are Tough All over were their worst.
