Harold Abrahams

Openning scene is Harold's funeral service. The service appeared to be Christian. What am I missing, as Harold was Jewish?

reply

He converted to Catholicism in the 1930s.

I suppose it's fair to note that the funeral seemed a lot more Anglican than Catholic, though I guess we didn't see enough of it to make a definitive call.

.
He actually never converted to Catholicism -- that's a myth, disproved by Abrahams' biographer Mark Bryan in his 2011 book, Running with Fire.

Harold led a secular life after the Olympics and his marriage to Sybil.

His memorial (not funeral) was at an Anglican church that was the standard venue for memorials for journalists.

Ok. I thought it was ironic that he converted from one oppressed religion to another as England was very anti Jewish and Catholic back then. And the film focused on his feelings of isolation and oppression, so Catholicism would've put him in the same boat as Judaism back then in England.
