Can anyone who originally saw this on television recall on what night or nights this aired, plus the promotion and critical reception at the time?

This feels like a miniseries, and a surprisingly good one at that. I found it on VHS for 99 cents at a used video store, and it was money well spent. Great cast and quite a potboiler of a plot. 7/10 stars from me.

I saw it's original airing. It was all aired at once. I don't remember much promotion, not like "Rich Man, Poor Man" or anything. It seemed to me to be just another made-for-TV movie.

The original airdate was 10/13/1981 at 8:00PM Eastern/7:00PM Central on CBS (WBBM Channel 2 in Chicago). The movie is part of Mill Creek Entertainment's "The Excellent Eighties" 50 Movie Pack. Print on the DVD is great and upscaled using an HD-DVD player.

Thanks for the details, jimpiscitelli. That "Excellent Eighties" set has some great public-domain titles, as well as some not-so-great ones. The price is certainly right!
