About the 1rst Watch Officer ...

This boy, raised in wealth in Mexico by his stepparents who owned a plantation, absolutely had an condescending attitude and was the only crewman who made the effort to maintain his proper uniform and trim appearance while all the others grow their beards in the traditional fashion.

But, still, he performed his duties admirably during the u-boat's nightmarish journey through hell ! Even after being informed that his fiancee has lost her life in an air- raid.

The young, by-the-book officer and ardent Nazi, in the beginning of the movie was someone the other officers made fun of, and look down upon. But if we watch closely, he never once backed down from his responsibilities, nor lost his nerves.

Anyone else given this some thoughts ?

Indeed.

He also stays cool when the crewman is shot (the ALAAAARM scene).

I'm just on my way up to Clavius.
