1945 menu from American USS Bowfin sub

The USS Bowfin can be toured in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. (Or used to be, anyway.) It was cramped in there, but not quite as bad as on the sub in Das Boot.

There is the menu for the week of 28 May 1945 on display at the exhibit.

(If/when that link above goes bad, you might be able to find a copy of the menu by doing an internet search.)

Friday ! 

I'm just on my way up to Clavius.

Interesting that lunch looks like a more substantial meal than dinner. Thanks for posting that.

"Baked Luncheon Meat"

I guess it makes sense that you would want the bigger meal to be while you are still moving around and working rather than at night.

There's an old Soviet sub (at least used to be) in Long Beach, the Scorpion. Interesting to see how cramped and narrow it was. I can only imagine how it would have been back when there was a full crew, during extended times below the surface.

I've been on the Scorpion. They had to "hot bunk" (take turns in the same bunks), and some of the bunks are so short you'd have to sleep with your knees bent. Forget it!

My dad was on a U.S. Navy destroyer in WWII, and he said the food was terrible. Meals in the submarine service were known to be much better, so if his ship was ever in port with a sub, he'd make friends with some submariners and get invited on board to share their fare.

In the late 1990s I toured that sub. It was great! Absolutely fascinating.

A lot better options than I thought there would be. Probably really big servings too.
