What happened to Kaleun Thomson?

Kapitanleutnant Thomson is seen at the beginning of the film, making a drunken speech in a nightclub.

Wikipedia states "After failing to make contact later, it becomes apparent that Thomsen's boat is missing". I've watched the film several times and never spotted this, where is it in the film?

I cannot pinpoint it's exact location in the film for you but I do remember the occurrence.

The radio operator gives the Kaelun the message. He intercepted the news on a broadcast from BdU.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

U boats had to report daily. After 3 days and no contact something serious is assumed to have happened.U 96 assume the worst.

It could part of the five-hours TV-mini series. Hinrich, the W/L operator and Sani listens to calls from BDU that U-(something) must report back. After a week or so it was common to expect the boat Missing In Action. In most cases, though not in all, it was only too true.
But I have watched the film in diffenrent cuts so it might be just be possible that it is in one of the 'Cinema cuts' . It could be in an English language version - some dialoge in English differ widely from the German original (maybe to match the movements of lips!!!) But I am 99 pct. sure that the scene is not part of the German language 'Director's Cut'

I have just finished watching the Director's Cut again and could confirm that the scene was not there. It was, however, definitely in the book. The implication was of course that Thomsen's boat had been lost, and sunk so quickly that there was no time even to send a message. I think it might also be possible that people who have read the book might mix up what is in the book and what is in any version of the film.

I found it. It is in the original uncut version (which incidentally is well worth watching as it has a lot more plot development than the Director's Cut)

The officers are listening to a radio propaganda broadcast, reporting German successes. After it ends, Lt Werner asks if there is any news about Thomsen. The Kaleun replies "They have been trying to contact him for a week, there's nothing". The 2nd Lieutenant says "Then there will be another boat reported missing next week".
