Question about the ending

I recall the ending which was very quick and intense, but I did not see whether the crew was still on board when the bombing occurred. Did any of the crew make it out or did they go down with the sub?

reply

If I remember correctly, nobody was on board at that time, but many crew members still got killed during the bombing.

Several of the crew are shown outside the boat and dead following the air raid, including Ullman, Johann, the 2WO and Preacher. Other crew are shown severely injured, and some relatively uninjured including Lt Werner. The Kaleun is alive at this point but dies as he watches his boat sink. It is not shown whether any of the crew went down with the boat, although as it does not sink until the air raid is over it would seem likely that any remaining crew would have escaped before it did.

Almost every crew member is still on board when the bombing starts - they follow 'standard procedure': casualties are the first to 'abandon ship'.
But most of the the crew are standing parade on the 'quarterdeck' - the only ones 'below' are probably those needed to manoeuvre the boat.
You actually see how fast the evacuate when the attack starts.
So you can be sure that nobody goes down with the boat. U-boat men knew how to evacuate - and fast...
