Absoluteley HORRIBLE Remake!

the acting in this film is CRINGE INDUCING.

Such a shame. The original with John Garfield is quite good. It's pathetic when they shamelessly try to recreate the good work of others.

but i recall it had some nudity in it. like some kinda 3 some or something.

I remember it breaking my heart seeing a bloated ravaged Peter Lawford in this garbage.

Am I the only person who actually loved this remake? I have yet to see the original, I must confess, but the 1981 version really moved me when I first saw it on Showtime way back in the day. It gave me good lessons and insights about things such as the dark side of fame and success, the way good intentions could eventually escalate into selfishness, and lessons about perseverence against all odds and believing in yourself. One may argue that the original 1947 version presented all of these important insights better than the remake, but I must say that the 1981 version conveyed all of these important life lessons just fine as far as I was concerned. I always thought Leon Isaac Kennedy's version of Leon the Lover was a very interesting character in the history of cinema, and I regret the fact that no sequel was ever made (then again, sequels do tend to go downhill after awhile). I certainly would have preferred that Kennedy made three films about Leon "The Lover" Johnson than wasting his time making the trilogy of films in the 'Penitentiary' franchise (even if the second in the series had its good moments, and gave us what may have been Mr. T's best moments on the big screen, a role that few people appear to be aware of).

So I felt I should weigh in and provide a counter to all the negativity surrounding the reviews of this movie here.

No. You're not the only one. I LOVED this remake. It's one of my all-time favorite movies.

I never saw the original, but I love this one.

Agree %100. I don't know why they bothered restoring this lousy movie and releasing it on dvd, when there are many good films that are unavailable. "Body and Soul" was Leon Isaac Kennedy's vanity project; he starred in AND wrote this mess. This dude was really in love with himself. The few good fight sequences and the very brief appearance of Muhammad Ali do not make up for everything else. I loved his debut film, "Penitentiary," from 1979. Just watch that one instead..
