The clown in a way is a mirror image of Ned. We see Ned getting out of his car and into a red convertible at that moment of the movie, just as a clown drives by driving a similar red convertible. The scene is an omen to Ned and foreshadowing to us, he's playing the clown and being manipulated by Mattie.

You took the words right out of my mouth.I have a question of my own WHY DIDN'T ANYONE HAVE AIR CONDITIONING???. Especially Matty's house, I never saw so much sweat in a film !!lol.

Body Heat = lots of sweat! lol!!
It strikes me that there was an episode of Cheers in which the gang debates the sweatiest movies of all time. They may even mention Body Heat -- I only recall Rocky II and Cool Hand Luke among the nominees -- but it's interesting that Ted Danson participates in the discussion when he himself stars in a potential candidate.
