I didn't really think Travolta could be this good. It's a shame he's being held prisoner by Scientology. I kind of feel bad for him.

He really was damn good here, wasn't he?

reply

Agreed, I really loved his performance in this film, still one of his very best. 

He was really, really superb. Probably his best performance. It's a very mature, nuanced, authoritative turn for him. And streetwise. Love that part, in particular. He's quite believable and likable throughout the entire film and has great chemistry with Nancy Allen, who is also quite fine.

It's a shame that Travolta's become a rather clownish figure in a lot of ways. Some of it is not exactly his fault. And of course he's had a good share of personal tragedy to deal with on top of the various scandal. But boy, was he in command at this time. Pure movie star stuff.

I agree. He's precisely perfect in it. Very, very assured and moving performance.

Agreed. I think this is his best film performance.

I hated the script because it was based on creating a movie from a few dozen photos which is impossible.

However Travolta did a excellent job with a terrible script. He has done well in great roles and also wound up choosing terrible movies to play in. Maybe he needs the money to be able to own and fly his collection of airplanes any will do anything for a buck.

The most important thing is sincerity. If you can fake that you've got it made.

You don't understand, in the 1980's they had this incredible frame interpolation technology that sadly never caught on and the inventor died before he told anyone how it worked and it was lost to time

He was really great in this. I feel I really missed out until I saw this for the first time last night thanks to a mention in Empire magazine. John Lithgow was nice to have in it but I felt he wasn't quite as developed as he was in later films (eg. Buckaroo Banzai).

Another great performance in this film, I think, is the cop detective at the police station. I thought they engaged really well in that scene.

I agree I thought he was very good in this.

I like making fun of Travolta, but hlhe was great in this.
