needs a remake badly

The premise was interesting but the execution was horrible as it's just a Jaws wannabe.

Bad pacing, a weak as hell monster, the monster barely in it, no hot girls etc. what a cop-out, this is one of those movies that needs a remake to improve it and make it more fun plus a bit gory and sexy like Piranha 3D.

And also needs a better monster than that including more of the monster shown.

If they redid this film, the original might be released on blu-ray.

I like using spoilers.

Totally disagree with you. The execution, especially the vivid music score and the sepia-like tint of the light in the film makes me nostalgic for its setting of 1970's Santa Monica, though I was not there at the time. And are you saying Mariana Hill (who was the dancing "green girl" in Star Trek) wasn't attractive in this?

Sexy? 3D? Remake? -Wow, I think you must be a Justin Bieber/Selena Gomez fan and not really a fan of vintage horror.

Hi, sorry, I just wanted to kvetch about horror / sci-fi remakes a bit.

You're right, some remakes are good and some old films should be remade. However I think many people are getting tired of overdone computer effects. The new re-make of "The Thing" might have the right blend of effects to be a great remake, though.

Personally while it was certainly flawed I don't think it was horrible and is well worthy of its monster movie cult status. The premise is creepy as hell, has some good scenes, some of the cast is great (especially Saxon and Young), doesn't take itself too seriously and isn't afraid to poke fun at itself.

I'm all for a remake but I haven't been too impressed with Hollywood for a long time, chances are they wouldn't improve on anything and probably do worse.

I just finished watching a crappy DVD-copy that I bought on half.com distributed by Desert Island Classics. The source video is clearly a well-worn VHS copy that was burned to DVD (yes, it is complete with rolling tracking lines). The DVD case features awful artwork that looks like it was slapped together by a failed graphic artist using photos found on google images. Now, back to the movie. I had never seen it before but had been curious about it for 30 years. In hindsight, can't believe that I wasted even a second's time thinking about it. While it is an interesting premise, there is virtually no blood nor suspense in the movie. There are too many long, protracted scenes where secondary characters blather on about nothing, such as a distraught wife going into exhaustive detail about what her missing husband was wearing. The best/worst is a useless scene where Marianna HIll sings off-key in a saloon (you'll want to fast forward through it). There's also a confusing scene where the Harry character makes a date with his slutty stewardess neighbor, breaks the date a minute later to go out with Catherine, but then the movie cuts to Harry complaining to Catherine that he was stood up by the stewardess. A lot of the dialog is out of sync with the video, so that's good for a laugh or two. Believe it or not, the music soundtrack isn't half bad, although parts of it sound like it was lifted from an episode of Knots Landing. I did enjoy seeing delapitated old buildings that were at the Santa Monica pier and was surprised at how run down the now famous landmark had sunk by 1980. The monster that lives below the sand looks like he was borrowed from Little Shop of Horrors and is not the least bit scary. FYI, we never actually see it attack a single victim; it just kinda flails about and roars. The finale happens very quickly, but naturally sets up the story for a thankfully never-to-be-filmed sequel. The acting isn't awful in this one - John Saxon is quite sturdy, Burt Young appears to be intoxicated throughout, and David Huffman is likable. And as a previous poster noted, this film would probably only warrant a PG rating today as there is surprisingly little to no gore. In the end credits, both Ms. Hill's first name and the production company's name are mis-spelled. Just another example of the poor production value that went into this film.

I'm surprised people didn't really like it although I shouldn't be. I get that it was a little long, and some scenes were drawn out but I just watched it and thought it was pretty decent for a 70s horror movie.

One thing to note, he makes that date with the "slutty stewardess" but then she's killed by the monster on her way to his house. He thinks she stood him up so he goes to see the actual love interest. It isn't until the next morning that he realizes what actually happened.

I also thought the monster was pretty cool. It was essentially sea/plant based, which is what the coroner was trying to get at. That's why when they blow it up in the end each piece regenerates into a new creature.

I think a little bit of extra thought, better editing, and updated special effects would make a pretty fun remake. This one isn't quite good enough to risk being "ruined" by someone taking another shot at it.

The major similarity is that it involves a monster under the sand eating people, but the story is too different for it to be a remake. I'm sure Blood Beach inspired The Sand to some degree, though. In practice the 2015 flick is more of a 'trapped' horror, a la 'The Raft' segment in Creepshow 2.

I really thought Sand was intended as a remake.

I generally hate remakes... Total Recall, Conan, Point Break, Robocop... all totally unnecessary. Let's not even talk about Ghostbusters.

Occasionally they get it right, like Piranha (which, lest we forget, was in itself a rip-off of Jaws).

Actually, come to think of it, Tremors was kind of a rip-off of Blood Beach. Hmmm...

Now, Blood Beach is PERFECT for a remake. The original had a great poster and a fun premise (you can't even get to the sea... sucked into the sand) but really wasn't that good. Don't get me wrong, I still like it a lot (why else would I be posting here?) but potentially it could have been so much more.

REMAKE: give it the Piranha 3D treatment. More skin, more blood 'n' guts. It could be set at a beach volleyball competition. The monster should be some prehistoric entity living under the sand (I can't remember if they explained the original one). Definitely CGI. Maybe gelatinous, like a cross between a jellyfish and The Blob. Anyway, so many possibilities...
