I saw this film when it first aired on tv in 1981 while I was in the hospital for anorexia (a little known mental health issue at that time). It really hit the nail on the head about the reality of what it is like to struggle with an eating disorder and matched the book very well!

just an interesting bit of info- the book was written by Steven Levenkron- the therapist for Karen Carpenter's anorexia.

reply

It has been stated that Karen Carpenter was engrossed with the book " The Best Little Girl In The World.." She had read it many times over while she was suffering with her Eating Disorder. The book was one of the reasons that she choose to seek out Steve Levenkon as her counsellor. She moved from California to New York City to undergo treatment with Steven in late 1981 and returned home a year later at Thanksgiving 1982. However sadly Karen had waited far to long to seek out help for her anorexia and 26 years ago this Febuary 4th she passed away from a heart attack...

it was a good movie but i thought the book was better. there wasn't alot of similarities between the two. one interesting thing...there is a body double used in a couple of scenes, casey's hair and the doubles hair is different.

Kissyroberts, the name of the book is the same name as the movie.

the book is a pro-ana bible. it's very thinspirational. it was written by some nitwit doctor who has no real understanding of what it is like to be eating disordered and that's maybe why he didn't realize he was actually writing something that could trigger people and be very unhealthy reading material. this book did nothing more to me than make me want to be like Kessa.

reply

I totally agree with you. I first became anorxic in fourth grade, and was getting help for it by 8th. I read this book in tenth grade when I was doing research for a report for health class. It did trigger me; I ended up starting the anorexia thing all over again. This is not a good book.

I love being an 18 year old girl!

reply

the book is horrible. its just the author/therapists HUGE ego trip about how he "saved" kessa. i have had an ed since i was in 5th grade and i absolutely HATED the book. if you want a good ed book...read wasted

reply

What's the story line for wasted? I have had an ed for about 3 years and personally ANYTHING I read or see about ed's make me want to go down that track, but there's just something in me that can't stay away from reading that stuff. I don't knoe maybe its just me. Anyways yeah tell us about wasted?

add me on msn!!!! [email protected] i get bored and want someone to talk to [smile2]

I read the book. Can't remember if I saw the film, though.

God save Donald Duck, vaudeville and variety

reply

I do like Wasted better than The Best Little Girl in the World. Wasted is an autobiography about Marya Hornbacher's battle with anorexia.

Ok I have a question about ED books.
I read something years ago and tried to find it again and I cannot for the life of me remember what book it was. It MAY have been "wasted", but maybe somebody could help me out.

it was about a girl who was anorexic/bulimic and all I remember was that she started dating some dude who rode a motorcycle, and (SORRY THIS IS GROss): at one point (or several?) she purged into the bathtub as opposed to the toilet, and I THINK at ONE part of the story she was also pooping at the same time or fingering herself at the same time as puking. I can't even remember but it was something going on where stuff was coming out both ends. (sorry again, I know that's gross).

and the book had to have been published at some point before 2008. because I read it before then.
