How old was Arthur?

How old was he supposed to be? At first I thought he was in his 20s, because of the way he acted. But he looks older. Anybody know?

reply

I would say that he was probably about the same age as Dudley Moore.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

reply

I'm sure the character was supposed to be pushing 40 or maybe already in his very early 40s.

Professional Jayne Mansfield fanatic/loverâ„¢ since 1980.

Dudley Moore was 46 when he made this movie, his character is probably someone slightly younger but Dudley pulled it off as he did not look 46 in my opinion.

reply

I thought mid 30's. Short people rock.

Uh, NO. He was 46 when the movie was RELEASED.

reply

I think we can all agree that he was old enough to know better.

reply

He was in his 40ies and acted like an immature 20-year old.
That was the whole point-of-departure

And for my opinion; that´s why Susan wanted him in the first place

reply

I always thought it was funny that he told Bitterman, "How often does a young man get engaged?"

He's just NOT young...just young at heart.

reply

I think Arthur was about 38-41 yrs. old.

I think Arthur was about 38-41 yrs. old.
Sounds so scientific, but probably about right.

He's obviously out of his 20's.
Looks way to young to be in his 50's.

Which means somewhere in his 30's or 40's. You hit the mid range on that.

reply

He looked like he was at least in his late 40s if not early 50s. I'm not sure how old the character was supposed to be. Oddly enough, Russell Brand's Arthur looks closer to the age Arthur was supposed to be.

reply

I thought he was in his thirties. Even now, watching the movie of TMC -- I'm thinking thirty five to forty.

reply

That would be a pretty rough 35. But then again, Arthur wasn't exactly all about his health.

reply

He was 46 when the movie was made, but then again it could the first time that Hollywood had an actor portray a younger character. And his Dad does not look old enough to me mid-sixties or above.

reply

I think it's safe to assume he was not supposed to be 46 (Dudley's age). I don't think his family would have waited that long to impose the forced marriage upon him. I think 40 seems like a likely cutoff point, so I'm gonna guess he was meant to be somewhere around 38 give or take a year.

reply

I'd say you are right on with your guess except to add in that his exact age is not the issue. What is that he had reached the point where the world made him either have to grow up or not...and he did. Have met many people older who still have not.
