WHY does Arthur call his grandma "Martha"??

You call your grandmother "grandma" and you do NOT address her by first name! So why on earth did Arthur keep calling his grandma "Martha"?

For some reason I picture a younger Martha not wanting to be made to feel old by little boy Arthur calling her Grandma.

But they never said anything about that. It's just very strange to call your own grandparents by their first name and I've never seen that before!

It's not the norm, but it isn't unheard of like it NEVER happens.

My mother insisted her first grandchild call her by her name for a long time. She is ok with being called grandma now but it took a while.
