They never explained WHY does Arthur have a British accent??

How does a guy from an American family sound British? Everyone else in the family has an American accent!

I have been wondering about that for years.

His father (I think) and grandmother had those accents. Hobson was the one that raised him and he too was a Brit. For all we know he might've visited there often as well. Some "Upper Crust" people had a certain accent like that Take Katherine Hepburn for example. She often sounded British to me and she was an American.

Do you think he wants some cheese?

Arthur went to school in the UK. He makes that clear.

When did Arthur say he went to school in England? I've seen this movie more than once and don't recall that.

Actually it's strange his father had a British accent too. Burt Johnson didn't so maybe he should've played Arthurs father.

Watch the scene in the horse stall again. He tells Linda he was away at prep school as a child. This implies his family is from England, including his father.

He never said WHERE he went to prep school. Plus just because you go to prep school in England doesn't mean your family is British. My guess is maybe Arthur's father IS British and came to America and married Arthur's mother(who they NEVER show)and then sent Arthur to prep school in England.

That's just a guess because THEY NEVER SAID THAT IN THE MOVIE! They never explained why he sounds like a redcoat.

reply

Yeah, suggesting that the term "prep school" somehow implies "England" is almost as funny as the film itself.

reply

Because Dudley Moore is British, just like Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn always sounded British in every movie, even if they were playing American.

.

reply

DAME Julie Andrews is British you numpty.

reply

I realize that... you twit. My point was that she was never able to shake off her accent, no matter the role.

You called me a twit.....Brilliant

reply

Actually the Bachs are British. I guess you didn't notice the beginning with Aunt Pearl and Uncle Paul, they are quite British I assure you. As well as his father and Hobson. Probably as has been suggested the mother was American so his Grandma is American on his Mother's side.

Uncle Peter.

perhaps he picked it up from Hobson? He seems to have spent more time with Hobson growing up than with his own family.

reply

There are certainly anglo elements about the family;
One thing I am surprised about re some of the above comments;
doesn't everybody realize Arthur's mother is dead?

reply

The Spaniard sounds Scottish.
